WD 250ks Sata 16meg cashe and MP3 burning and CPU

Thread Starter
I have a WD 250KS 16meg Sata drive and it works fast compared to my WD 80Gig 2 meg cashe drive.
Here is my problem when and only when I burn a Music CD from some Mp3's does
the CPU usage go up to 50-70%.
When I burn data DVD's at 8x or higher the CPU usage is under 5%.
I have a 754pin 3200+ AMD and I stressed the CPU in test and it works fine.
I benchmark my games and they work fine also.
I used many burning software Nero 6 and other free software out on the web but still the same.
I even tried a new DVD burner from a friend and still the same.
Any help would be nice thanks.

it takes cpu usage to convert the mp3s for an audio cd. when burning a dvd i think that the dvd+rw is doing all the work and not much is being done by the cpu. it also depends on what you were burning

When recording mp3's to a CD, the files have to be converted to a format understandable to any cd player. Thus, there will be a load on the CPU (yours is not bad, I have seen programs that load the CPU 100%). When copying data, it's just straightforward: no or little CPU load.

I assume the same occurs when you copy from your old drive...

Good luck

so what are you asking.. why does it go up so much.. when you rip or burn an mp3 to cd or a cd to mp3 it has to convert the format from cda to mp3 or mp3 to cd so it uses more of the processor to do this.. when simply burning data to a dvd it doesnt take much since nothing is being converted

Well you are all correct in saying their is more CPU usage in converting a MP3 into a Audio Cd, But before the usage was around 10-15% when I had my IDE WD harddrive.
The Harddrive is Sata DMA enabled.
Why the big increase in CPU useage and I really can't even surf the net when i'm burning an Audio CD.
Surfing the net burning a Data DVD no prob never costered a DVD yet!

It is possible that the speed difference between the hard drives is so significant that the CPU will be much heavier tasked to do the conversion. IT simply has to convert faster, hence the heavier load. As I said, there are plenty examples of mp3 conversion programs that tax the CPU 100% when burning them to CD...

And at 50-70% load, you should be plenty able to use your pc (ok, not gaming)

What is your CPU load when burning an Audio CD on your computer?
Is mine out of wack?
