Score one for AMD. I like to see the playing field be more even. Competition is healthy, don't forget that!

It is going to be nearly impossible to uphold. While I agree that government contracts shouldn't go out exclusively to Intel, or AMD alike, we must understand that if this was to happen in other industries, where performance and product qualities differ, it would be unfair, and unwise to support this broad based, buy from everyone scheme. What if AMD didn't have a certain technology that Intel had, how can we expect to balence out purchases when one is clearly more in demand?

While Intel is a monopoly, the type of thinking expressed here is flawed. What if I started my own chip company, and I sold some saltines with a little cheese on the top. Would it be fair then? What about the little guy, besides AMD and Intel? Where are they? If anything, it supports the market dominence of the two companies.

I don't know, but this doesn't sound like a good thing unless it is unfair. And if it is unfair it makes it not a good thing.

This provision is about creating government accountability more than anything. The article states:
Quote:
The changes mean that federal procurement officers need to publish justifying the use of a brand name in all tenders that are over $25,000.
That seems to suggest that the government will not favor particular brands for large purchases ($25k)... that should technically make it easier for all chip makers.

All this simply means is saying that hey look, theres AMD to check them out and buy this product if it suits you better.. Which right now in servers, AMD is dominating.

But then again, there's the addage "Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely." or something like that. I just think that we need to see something that's at least a 65/35 market split between Intel and AMD. Then we'll be cooking.

This is good for a fair consumer decision, hopefully Conroe will help Intel with their P4 "era" woes
