Once you get the Quad I think doing one SMP client (2 of the cores folding) will give the best results. That will be at least 1200 ppd just with the SMP. It might be worth seeing how many points one of the cores of the Quad can get, the PS3 + one core might be more points than doing SMP on the Quad. I guess we'll see.

I know I'm not in your team...but one one SMP client on a quad will tax all four cores...hope this helps.

i should be able to set the affinity so it only uses 2 cores though right. And once i get the quad im not folding with the ps3 i have a feeling it degrades the life of the system. Probably not alot but my quad will have a 3 year warranty lol. And my quad should get to atleast 3.2 im hoping for 3.4 or 3.6 depending on temps.

I think you can set the affinity, since Taeric said you could run one SMP for our team and one for the general overclock.net team.

This works like a charm in Linux. It explicitely assigns cores to each instance of the program. If Windows, you may have to manually set the affinity through the task manager, and I'm not sure if changing it around would cause any problems.

Thanks for the advice T.

It seems as though I lost my first SMP WU, not a good sign huh? Hopefully that doesn't continue, since it worked out to be a little more than 2100 ppd for the 1760pt Gromacs.

EDIT: I seem to have found the potential problem, it's a problem at least. I have dial-up, and whenever I disconnect after downloading a new WU it stops folding. Not sure why, but it does. I am going to look for a fix for this, but I don't know if it will be worth it right now. The results were like 5MB, which is a huge pain to upload on this connection.

I have begun saving my money for my next upgrades, which includes a new Q6600, B.Walker's X1900, and more. I will be selling my E6400 and GFX card to Retrospekt soon for part of the funds for those upgrades. After I do that I will probably give him my spot on the team for the time being, and possibly forever. *sheds a tear* Once I get my Q6600 and X1900 I will have a total of 7 cores to fold with, and want to start climbing the ranks. I will have more info as it becomes available.

SMP requires some give and take with the servers, so dial up is going to be a problem unless you are connected all of the time. I'm not sure that there is a work around for this, but if you find one, be sure to share it here.

I racked up 36,375 points this month on Vista WinSMP. Cant wait to see the results when we are all SMP folding

I am going to try out VMware in XP 64. My 8800gts performs poorly in Vista. I get the nvlddmkm error. No sense in RMAing it when i plan on stepping up in the near future anyway. Runs fine in XP 64. I tried to install Slamd64 but it didnt work. Seemed to install fine, but wouldnt boot up in VMware. I am going to try Arch Linux 64 and then Ubuntu if that doesnt work. I think Linux hates me. If i dont even use it for awhile it just wont work when i try to use it again. Or just screws up if it is halfway working. If i fold 24/7 in Linux i might be able to hit 50k points, or slightly below. Apparently you cant do WinSMP in XP 64. I couldnt get it to work.

I looked around and found this on the FAH site that I am going to try:

Quote:
2. When something happens to my network (changing settings or other tweaks), the FAH/SMP client has problems.
One issue with the SMP client is that the client uses MPI to handle multiple processors and MPI uses the network system (albeit on the local loopback device). If the network is tweaked during a run, this can cause problems for the loopback device, causing problems with MPI, causing Gromacs to fail.

What should (in principle) then happen is that the client should restart from a check point. Are you finding this to be the case? It could be that the core can't identify this situation well and the client sees a major problem and restarts, not knowing something better to do.

We are looking into this and in particular whether we can detect this well enough such that the client restarts from a checkpoint (best case scenario). For now, please don't change the network settings while FAH/SMP is running (you can always stop the FAH client, change the settings, and then restart the client later).
http://folding.stanford.edu/FAQ-SMP.html

So basically I am going to Ctrl + C the client, disconnect, and then start it back up. Probably do the same when I re-connect to the internet.

EDIT: Seems to have worked, just waiting for the WU to finish. I am not getting nearly the same PPD on this WU as the last one though.
