If its what he wants to do let him do it...maybe the switch to resolutions will make him a worse player, you get used to somethign its hard to change and be as good, have to adapt. And maybe he doesnt want to have to adapt.

Yes, you are. Things on screen appear larger in the real-world than if you were at a higher res. This would be an advantage that should be used in competitive play.

In regular and practice play native res should/probably will be used.

Even though it uses a lot more power and will output more heat, that's competitvely priced enough where that might be a good choice. OP's choices are more expensive by quite a bit. If he could find one @ that price range I'd be OK in reccomending that in this case.

Actually its about even one on one.
The kicker is, CrossfireX 6870's faceroll SLi GTX 470's.
Better min/max frames most the time.

Fermi scales well. Radeons scale better.

Well PhysX doesn't really do much right now that impresses much (its got a start) and the Radeon 6XXX's handles tessellation well.

im only after those two models due to their cooling, thats why i picked $300 470's. and the 460s due to their oc. counter-strike 1.6 is not ment to be played at high res.

LOL ati sucks plain and simple ,like you said 16/18 why not just go for the 18/18, i owned both ,and nvidia wins and what results that a 6870 cfx smokes a 470 sli? i think its the other way around ,sli scales way better than cfx also in every and i mean every review ive read, and seeing as how i have both in diff rigs same other parts the 470 win.

Both the GTX 460 and the 6870 are great cards! Cannot go wrong either way! Just go with the GTX 460 1GB if you go that route.

The GTX 460 1GB and GTX 580 are easily Nvidia's best cards now, they are darn nice.
It's fun watching the price wars go back and forth...
