Ok, so I just tried one single upping of the the FSB by 5 and everything seems to be working great. But I don't know how far I want to push this cpu on the stock HSF. I think it may be going the way of the ghost anyways as it's kind of loud. So what are some good HSF companies that you guys use and like the cooling results of?

Also I'm not completely sure how the memory clock works either. Previous to my little overclock that I did my RAM would run at the same speed but now they are different.

You can see that the memory timings of the two modules are different. I believe that the original setting is the one on top. How do I get them to match or does it matter since my mobo doesn't support dual channel?

If you guys have any suggestions for cpu HSF or my memory inquiry that would be awesome. Thanks for all the help so far! I'll post more screenies when my finals are over.

EDIT: Uhhh, what happened to that pic? Sorry.

Are you at your maximum overclock. You need to test with Prime95 and stay focused on the processor overclock first.

You read what I wrote? You need to inform not only that you read but how you applied the instructions, rather than move on to another event of the overclock (memory).

Sorry to get distracted, I just don't know what's normal when overclocking so the difference in the memory speed between the two DIMMs made me wonder if it was a problem.

Yes Ropey, I read your previous post. Thanks for all the info, it helped out immensly! So far the only adjustment I have made was a change of 100mhz to 105mhz to the FSB. When I made the change the BIOS automatically changed the CPURAM Clock Ratio to 1:1 as opposed to SPD, which it was on previously. So I'm assuming this is what caused the change in RAM speed.

Whether or not I'm at my maximum overclock, I'm don't know. I hope not since I've only made one adjustment so far and I'm hoping to get some more speed out of the cpu.

I picked a really bad time to be trying this seeing as how I'm in the middle of finals and so I probably won't post back or have time even to try anymore FSB changes until the end of the week. But as things usually go, I most likely will find a way for it to distract me.

As for prime95, I've never used it and I don't have it but I imagine I can download it somewhere. I'm also guessing that it's a stability testing program of some sort. Are there specific tests I should be running? Also what should I be looking for to determine whether or not my system is stable? Are there other things besides rebooting? Again, thanks for your all help!

Prime95 is a program which searches for very large prime numbers. What overclockers use it for is testing for errors on computers which might be (via overclock) instable. If there is any problem with your CPU, your RAM, or the parts of your motherboard which are the interface between your CPU and RAM, then Prime95 has a tendency to fail.
This is a very useful characteristic if your computer is flakey on the overclock and you're not sure which component is causing the problem. If your computer can run Prime95 for 24 hours without any errors, then you can usually assume that your CPU, and the parts of the motherboard which interface with the CPU and RAM, are stable and working well. The program is free and you can download it from here:

Ok, so now that my semester is over and done with I'm ready to give this a go again. I just made one more fsb adjustment and then I began wondering, how much stability testing should I be doing between each adjustment? Do I need to do this prime95 test overnight or will using the computer for a few minutes suffice?

Thanks for the welcome! Any bits of wisdom about stability testing in between fsb adjustments? Right now I've got the cpu up to 2.21 GHZ and because of my lack of experience I'm a little squeemish to keep going since I don't know what temps are normal and what aren't. I'm running prime95 and so far the highest temp rating I've seen is 56C. My idle temps are about 42-45C which is few degrees above my unclocked temps. I'm assuming this is just part of the fun?

EDIT: Make that 57C

So I aplied all the steps that Ropey suggested on page #1 and I've got my cpu up to 2.42 GHZ. I tried going up to 2.5 GHZ but after trying to run prime95 my computer crashed after about 10 seconds. I bumped down the FSB by 2 and the same thing happened so I brought it back down to 120 and it works fine. Right now I'm at a point where I don't know what to do next to get some more speed or if its even possible. I haven't tried increasing the voltage yet because I'm not really sure what the function of that is. All the overclocking faqs I've read explain a bit about it, but don't explain when to do so or how much to increase by.

If I'm reading them correctly then an overclock will eventually become instable because the cpu needs more power in order to run faster. Do I have this right? So by that definition when I reach a point where the computer crashes then I should up the voltage to the cpu?

Also from what I understand upping the voltage = increase in heat. I'm currently using the stock Intel HSF which I'm going to be replacing with a Zalman 9500 with some AC5 in the next few minutes or so to combat the heat issue.

So if anyone can shed some light on the situation for me that would be awesome! Thanks a bunch!
