BF2 Slow performance

Thread Starter
I posted all of this in multiple posts at another forum, so I am combining all of it here in one package... please help.

I recently upgraded my 9800 pro to a Geforce 6800 with all 16 pipelines unlocked but I am getting no better performance, in fact it may even be a little worse. On medium settings at a resolution of 1024*768 I am getting maybe around 30fps, certainly no more. I tried the provided nVidia driver as well as updated drivers from their website, but no luck. What gives?

As far as the pipelines, I was told when I bought it that they could unlock without problem, and I can run 3dmark with them unlocked without any corruption. I guess I can disable them and try again to see what happens. Other than that possibility, I certainly think my computer can handle this game. I wonder if it is some other setting in the game that is messing with the framerate. I did a fresh install of windows and the game and it is up to date.

Another paculiarity is that my card is clocked at 325mhz stock, but according to BFG my card (BFG 6800OC) should be clocked at 350mhz stock....

I kind of get tired of all of this... They put all these little things in the box to get you to buy stuff, and I do to get better performance, but it doesn't work! Did you see the little nvidia thing that says, and I quote, "On a Geforce 6800 or better you will be able to turn on all of the NVIDIA special effect features at higher resolutions in the game." What, and get 3fps! Also, none of the most popular sound cards are supported for hardware sound... I don't mean to be a whiner and I know none of you had anything to do with this, but it gets frustrating! I just ran FRAPS with BF2 running on MEDIUM settings and I get a MAXIMUM of 37fps... I am just going to laugh when it turns out to be something stupid I did.

Pretty much says it all. If some of it doesn't make sense, yell at me and tell me I'm stupid so I know to change/clarify. I will also note that the game defaults to HIGH settings, but I average about 10fps on that so not *quite* playable. Thank you

Tom

OK I might be wrong about this but, Ok so is the view distance all the way up, if so turn it down to around 64 percent. and then there are some serious details that screw up the game, such things are shadow detail, model detial, and texture detail, I sugest medium texture detial, medium geomatry turn of v sync if you have it on, anti alias at 2x, also try puting the aniscopic filtering to trilinear. umm see if that helps a lil

Yea I've been messing with settings nonstop but can't get anything decent going. With everything set to medium, dynamic shadows and lighting OFF and antialiasing OFF I still only get about 30fps on a single player map. I know I did better than that on my 9800

Weird I get 49 fps on everythign medium, anti alias 2x and dynamics low, on a single player map, i say view distance again. could be memory lag. but yeah that was on my 9800 xt.

BF2 likes lots of RAM so you may want to add another stick. Also your PSU looks a little weak. Might want to upgrade that.
Very nice!

It looks like I do need some more RAM... unfortunately, I am kind of planning on quitting my job today so I may have to wait until I find another one before I buy some more RAM because it is one thing I do not want to skimp on. For Dual Channel memory with 4 banks do all the sticks have to be the same or just two pairs of the same per channel? I am thinking about getting another 2GB (2x1gb) and adding it to my current 1gb.

Well it could be a couple of things causing this.

What drivers # are you using now?
Did you do a fresh install with V/C drivers using Driver Cleaner?
Could you please link me to your V/C so i may look at the specs?
Suggestion would be to get 1 more gig of ram, but i feel it is a driver issue.

I have the BFG6800GT 256MB O/C card and im getting 90 + FPS with ultra setting and AA X 2 with a fresh install of windows and drivers.

Please post back

Try this guide it will help get your BF2 running better. One guide is for your 6800 in general and the other is specific to BF2. I hava a 6800 on my P4 and runs the game fine with the settings in this guide and it only has 1GB of PC2700 RAM. Also do what lohoutlaw suggested with the drivers. Good luck getting it going amigo.

I am running the latest drivers (84.xx can't remember exactly).

Here is my card

I have not tried Driver Cleaner, but I will for sure. I will also check out those guides and post back as soon as I finish my Best Buy application

Edit: Sporadic, where does it go into the 6800 specifically?
