Microsoft targets Windows pirates with pop-ups - Page 2

They are targeting the people who buy computers with pirated OS systems. This has been in the works for some time and a good idea in my view.

Those who buy computers with pirated OS's will find it harder to use their OS's without being told it is pirated. Since they did not know, most will take the route of purchasing an online license and become legitimate.

This is the issue. Most people with purchased pirated OS's don't' even know they are stolen (another clearer word for pirated, and doubly so when sold in a system to an unknowing noob) and this will let them know. . . Continually. . .

I see, these makes more sense now, thanks.
I can see how it do though. My internet company will install a copyed version on to peoples computers that may of had a virus or what ever and then try to charge them for the copy. When its a copy/pirated version!! A disgrace IMO.

Yes, exactly. This isn't really out to get piraters that run unpaid-for versions of Windows, as, well, I'll put it this way: you don't need Windows Update (I have a NAT router and no Windows Update and I'm just fine, thank you), you don't need WGA nor do you need to get it, and you don't need to use bumpy software like IE.

Basically, Gates'll never get the guys that get Windows off torrents, just the guys that sell Windows on prebuilts to make money. Fine with me...!

I was on the live meeting when they cannouced the new WGA enhancements...

this is MAINLY to get a way for people to know when they are getting shafted by fly by night computer people. It was even said, "this targets the END user and makes it easier for our system builders to use authentic windows media" blah blah blah.

Well, there is a new update today...

Windows Genuine Advantage Notification (KB905474)
Download size: 829 KB , less than 1 minute
The Windows Genuine Advantage Notification tool notifies you if your copy of Windows is not genuine. If your system is found to be a non-genuine, the tool will help you obtain a licensed copy of Windows.

It's optional though.

I was told that M$ knows if your windows is a copy but cannot do anything about it because it would then be an invation of privacy.
