Need help for early Christmas present ... to myself

Thread Starter
I'm getting rid of my old rig, LGA1156, giving it to my uncle as his pentium 4 has started to finally die. As he's a very basic user, I can keep anything worth while in my system and replace it with something worse, although I don't think I'll do much of that. So for what I have

-Cooler Master HAF 932
-Patriot Viper PC3-12800 4x2GB
-Sapphire Vapor-X HD 5770 x2
-1.5TB Seagate Barracuda
-Corsair TX 950W

Now this is what I was thinking of getting
-ASUS Rampage III Extreme
-i7-950
-Cooler Master HAF X
-60GB OCZ Vertex 2 SSD (for boot drive)

Now I also want new GPUs as well as RAM, Rampage III QVL says it will only support 2 DIMM of that particular model. Don't know if I want to go for ATI or nVidia and don't know what PC3 of RAM to get either. Also don't know if i should get a SSD or a SATA 3 HDD. Any input would be greatly appreciated. And if you don't like one of the items I was thinking, let me know why.

Your PSU unless you want to go modular.

The HAF has plenty of room to store excess cables out of the way so that's not really something i'm going to worry about for the time being.

Not the best time to upgrade if you're wanting to go with high performance stuff. Any chance you can wait until January? If so, Sandy should launch on Jan 5th, so I'd at least wait to see solid benchmarks before spending a bunch on an i7. 69xx will also be out by then, so it'd be worth the wait.
Edit: Btw, Sata3 isn't going to help you. Grab an SSD.

The 50GB Vertex 2 are EOL... they are all 60GB now. Note, there are other SandForce SF-1200 "SE" SSDs.
Once again...

I say buy a Corsair TX650, put it in your old rig, and put the 950 in your new one(it can power tri SLI probably)

Consider a H50 or 70. Just because it's such a clean install and the unit looks so good in the case. Airflow is no issue, especially with the HAF. I would also go with a 650w or so modular PSU. Yes there is lots of room to hide cables in that case but the price on a decent mod psu is pretty appealing.

Good luck with your build, hope you uncle appreciates the upgrade he will be getting.

Thanks for all the input, I meant to type 60GB not 50 for SSD and I already have a H50 but was thinking of sending that away with the CPU. I'll check with my uncle how long he can wait before getting a new system, because I can definitely not do without one as I'm currently a computer science student.

I was also considering the 120GB Corsair Force Series because it's currently $80 off in my area. Still pricey though
