My computer burst into flames! MSI 890GXM-G65 - Page 26

Just found a picture on another forum:
662bebfa.jpg
They look to be a low RDS (on) type of MOSFET used on quality Gigabyte boards? (Albeit still arranged in 3-transistor design)

It could be as Sin0822 said once (concerning VRM failures), under-capable chokes cause power to backfire onto the MOSFETs and overload them
post #252 of 300
Can you get a better reading on those MOSFETs; looks are looks, spec's are specs.

it looks like the info on the chips in that picture say:
4837NH
R006 or ROO6

google comes up with this:

is there anyway we can change out or "CHOKES"?
what part is the choke exactly?
i mean can you point it out in that picture you got there?
thanks

The grey cube that says R50 is the choke.

The second number is the Revision number & Product Date.

While they are Low RDS(on) MOSFETs that won't guarantee success in any right, as it's just one factor of the circuit.
The MOSFETs themselves look solid but the problem could either related to the Chokes or the Drivers.

In either case, their is nothing you (the end user) can do. Redesigning a power circuit is not as simple as upgrading one component of any type. As everything has to be fine-tuned to work together.

i have read people overclocking to 4.2ghz at 1.5v on this board
i have read people blowing their boards just using turbo core enabled with default voltage.

is there anyway to monitor a component to tell if its going to blow?
i mean if the vrm`s are blowing as many have stated should we watch for a certain temp on those VRM`s as a sign it could blow?

CPU has certain max temps to watch as we overclock
GPU = same

those (3) VRM`s that are "NOT" covered by the heat sink (is that ok)?
i mean why are the other 12 covered and those 3 are not?
its a 4+1 does that mean the 4 part of the circuit (12 vrms are covered) and the +1 (3 vrms are not covered)?

i mean would it actually make a difference if i got 3 heat sinks for those chips?
i am betting not because they are not covered from factory

ok next question
i have read people saying that the heat sink was not coming in contact with some of the 12 vrm`s it covers because the boards are warping causing the heat sink to not stay connected to some of the 12 vrms in the middle
could that be the reason?

someone said they put something on the backside of their board to stop that warping so the board stayed straight/flat and stopped the vrm`s from pulling away from the heatsink.
do you think this could be the problem?

some people overclock at 1.5v fine and some dont....there has to be something we are missing
this board was made for the 140watt deneb originally and that 965 overclocked like crazy when you upped the voltage
was it a C1 or C2 or something

something isnt right

VRM's not covered by the heatsink aren't meant for CPU power delivery.
4+1 is talking about the Phase Count (generally denoted physically by the number of chokes on a board.)

4 + 1 means you have 4 power planes for the CPU Cores and 1 Power Plane for the Memory Controller & L3 Cache

As for watching temps, these VRM's are not spec'd to run above 85*C so you want to make sure they stay below that.

I was checking out the newest MSI 990FX board and it's stated as having the 8+2 power phase so maybe they've finally caught a clue. Downloaded the manual to checkout the listed features and it's clearly shown as having it.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813130600

So far this one hasn't given me a moment's problem but that can change in an instant. I've already decided this one will not see anything over four cores and I don't like using that too often but it seems to handle the load OK.
I'm leaning toward a Gigabyte this time but not in a real hurry to buy - We know there will be even better boards for BD by the time it's released.

It's based on the same design used on their 870A-Fusion & 890FX-GD65; though I do not know if they improved the MOSFETs yet.

I killed both boards with a bit of Sub-Zero cooling and a Thuban though.

Since it's a GD80 though, they most likely are using some upgraded MOSFETs allowing for a higher current flow and thus better heat tolerances.

If that's so, good.
You can get the manual and see what's listed for yourselves of course along with the quoted specs listed at their site.
