Something's Going Bad.. PSU?

Thread Starter

Greets,

Been awhile since I've visited Overclock.net and unfortunately this time it brings me back with a situation.

For about a week I've been having what were initially thought as RAID 0 issues with my onboard controller giving issues and marking a disk in my array as bad but the past 3 days, after a scandisk /r /f it's been working fine and online as it always has 24x7 but last night and now this morning I've got something new which I think may be causing all the issues; a possible going PSU.

In the video below you can see the flashing of the LED's in the case and the low "cracking" as if it's not getting enough juice. I've removed the RAID drives to start and reduce some of the footprint thinking the disks were causing the issues but a reboot later and it's still doing it.

About 1 in 5 boots it stays stable and boots up but shortly after engaging Windows or anything graphical (ie: kicks in the GPU) it pretty much shuts down and reboots again.

Bad PSU do we all think? Any sugguestions/comments recommended.

Thanks!

Anything in the event viewer?

I've had failing PSs do many unusual things and I would be swapping that one just to make sure.

From the looks of the way your system lights are studdering, I'de say either failing PSU or a bad ground somewhere =x

It's been stable as ever for 3 years now. Actually 3 years 7 months since I purchased and re-built with this PSU so I don't think it's a bad ground. I'm going to check but taping around the board, cables, etc doesn't seem to short it out like a grounding issue.

I've replaced the plug thinking maybe it was on the way out and removed my UPS from the mix going directly to the wall and still it occurs.

What's odd is again about 1x5 it will seem to surge up and start to boot but once within Windows it just out and out powers off and restarts.

Of course no spare PSU around (this wattage) so I can't simply swap it out right now and would hate to pop for another 700-900w PSU (that's reputable) and have it not be but I guess I may have no change.

I'll keep checking back for any other opinions and thanks to those thus far who've replied!

Yea I know but luckily I just found my digital multimeter and on the standard molex, while doing this "fading", the 5v line is only reading 2.45v and the 12v line is only reading 11.5 something.

I"m thinking it's just not juicing up most likely a bad cap or something..

I've powered off then on and when it does "catch" and start to boot the 5v line comes up more near 5v about 4.25 something and the 12v line comes up slightly more. I'm pretty sure this is going to prove positive it's the PSU but again don't wanna open a 120$ psu if I don't have to or need it, lol

Thanks Hippie!

I still think it's the PSU. If it's not then it's a cap on the board I'd think. You should be able to return the PSU opened I'd imagine, especially if it came from Best Buy or another retailer.

My first look would be into the PS when there are multiple issues popping up.
First try a quick BIOS check of the rails voltage.
Anything +/- 5% is no good.
Still, nothing like a voltmeter though

Yea.. I'm almost nearly thinking PSU at this point..

After getting a new 9v for the meter (amazing how well they work when they actually have a good battery ) I tested both the +5v and +12v on the molex and and while the first time the system booted up they were pegged and within limits with no fluctuation ~however~ after booting up Windows and put a bit of load on the system it promptly rebooted and got into this "shuddering" almost phase shifting as before. Now I saw massive fluctuation on both rails and the +12v was going anywhere from +12.83v to +11.33v and pretty much the same on the +5v rail

I did get the new 800w from Best Buy since I got a bit of a deal on it, being Corsair and at Best Buy, and in a pinch I guess I could return it but wanted to be very sure that I could return it. I feel bad about those types of things though..

Oh well waiting until OSU vs. IOWA is over (GO BUCS!) before I'll pull the old and decide to open the new.

Thanks all around peeps -- I greatly appreciate it!
