Turn internal DVD-RW into external USB DVD-RW?

Thread Starter
I have a spare IDE DVD-RW drive (I believe it's made by Emprex, 8x), and I want to build an enclosure for it and turn it into an external USB ODD. Is it doable?

There are a number of commercially available USB to IDE adapters; any one of these should work.

You just need to purchase an IDE DVD enclosure, like this one for example.

It comes with an AC/DC power adapter which simply plugs into a regular outlet.

do you have a UK link?

Though if it's that price I'll buy an external drive instead.

its actually much cheaper to just buy a normal internal dvd drive and an enclosure than an external one, and you can put this one back in if you want

or

these things are invaluable-much better to have one than buy an external drive.

Honestly you would be better off buying a new one. For about 10 or 15 quid more you could get a new one over a cheap enclosure.
Some cheap IDE to USB adapters could have issues as well.

Well, Gumtree has a Samsung DVD-RW for £15, USB. I can get a cheapo ebay enclosure for 10 + 5 postage, IDE.

The decider - would a 5.25 IDE enclosure also do 3.5" HDDs?
If it would I'll get the enclosure.

Note, that not all IDE-to-USB adapters are the same. I have used some that detect the ODD but do not work properly. Connecting to a HDD, they worked fine.
