My first build needs HELP!

Thread Starter
Ok, so I've decided to build me a desktop PC meant primarily for gaming and 3D/2D software (Maya, Photoshop, Premiere) usage but I'm not exactly the most IT-savvy guy around (compared to you geniuses). I've been doing tons of research on the parts and stuff so I more or less know the basic functions of each component (I think :\\)

Anyways, on to my build...

Display: Samsung PX2370
CPU: Core i7 950
GPU: Sapphire HD 5970 2GB DDR5
HDD: (Not sure, need suggestions, my dad told me about some casing that allows many disks to be stored if I need alot of space. Is this more worthwhile, seeing how I'll be dealing with alot of high-res files which take up alot of memory? )
PSU: Corsair HX859 EOS 850watts
MOBO: Either an Asus P6X58DE U3S6 or Asus Rampage Formula 3 or GA-EX58A-UD5. (If there's anything more worth, please tell me!)
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
RAM: Ok for this I'm not really sure. My dad tells me that I should get as much RAM as I possibly can so I need some suggestions for this as well)
Case:Lian Li PCX-1000 / Coolermaster HAFX or HAF932
Cooling Unit: Coolermaster V8
Sound Card: (I have no clue tbh, I don't need anything special)
Sound system: M-Audio Studiophile AV 40?

Okay so this is what've I've come up with. My budget isn't really that much of a concern although I'm not the richest kid on the block, so preferably around the prices of the stuff I've mentioned here.

I don't think I'll be overclocking just yet, but I might do so in the future. (I'm too scared :X)

I also would prefer if I'd be able to keep this rig running quietly and hopefully not heat up.

I'm not sure what else I need though, like cooling systems and whatnot or if these are compatible.

Oh and uh, if you guys don't mind, could you also tell me why you chose what you did.

So if I need to clarify anything else, please do ask. Thank you!

P.S Sorry I wasn't clear in the post on any part. I'm new to the whole forum thing

get a 6990 that will be out over a couple months
6990= upgraded same architecture dual gpu as 5970

maybe a i7 970/980X?
HDD
2x 1TB samsung F3 in raid
1x SSD bootup

Ram corsair DDR3 triple channel 1600+mhz 6GB minimal(you have no other choice rofl 6gb or nothing or 12GB)
dont fill all RAM slots will decr4ease overclocking potential

and yeah i made these choices for a rich kid since corsair ram are like 230$?
SSD are 160$ for a good one
6990 will be like 650$ O_O?

Oh thanks! But there's going to be IT fair in my area in a couple of days where components will be sold dirt cheap, so I was planning on getting everything there during that time

And I was thinking of getting a Corsair Dominator CMP6GX3M3A1600C8, how different is this compared to the one you mentioned?

And a i7 960/980x would be going waay overboard for me already haha!

Thanks for the HDD suggestions but may I know what an SSD is? I've seen the term used alot in the threads here.
Make sure you get 2 HDDs: run OS on one and use the other for storage.

Don't worry too much about the 6990. Unless you have multiple monitors or wattage-shortange issues, you can opt for the 5 series cards and still be in good shape. The performance increase won't but substantial from 5970 to 6990 unless you crossfire.

SSD=solid state disk
1 word = fast
2 words = very fast
3 words =faster then HDD
4words= 10x times faster then HDD

random read :/

1866mhz faster :/
not noticeable in realtime..

KK, Oh and about the graphics card. Would the 5970 be overkill? If so, what would you suggest I get now? I want to futureproof my system you see.

I'd also like to know about bottlenecking and would it affect my system.

i7 wouldn;t be bottleneckign with a 5970 no waaiii..

you better get a single card then crossfireX since it isn't optimized that good,
Kudos if you think my post are helpful

but yeah single cards or SLI scale better.

As for the 5970, it's going to run things for a long while, but it's only really worth two 5850's, and the 5870/6870 is likely to be good enough to max out most games on a single monitor for the next 2-3 years with 30-40+ FPS. If you want more than that you will want to go with the 5970.

Why the i7 950 and not the 930?

What kind of sound quality are you looking for? Do you really need a soundcard?

I didn't look at your motherboards that closely, but with PCIe x8/x8 split (or better), you might want to just opt for single cards and expand later. It'll probably be cheaper in the long run to pick up something like a 6850/5850 and then pick up a second and just slot it into the motherboard to expand later if you feel the need to. If you can wait a generation, the 6850's will likely have fallen in price a lot.

im just wondering why a HD5970 over a GTX580, I'm guessing its the 2GB over the 1.5GB but is it worth the $70 dollar price difference?
