My first build needs HELP! - Page 2

Hmmm, I never knew about the GTX580 to be honest. I'll go look up some comparisons. Thanks for the info.

What are your thoughts on this? All the reviews I've read (All 2 of em') have been pretty much cancelling each other out.

CPU: Why the 950? It's higher stock clocks but virtually the same CPU as a 930. If you get a good aftermarket cooler, you should easily be able to push it to 950 speeds using this forum
GPU: I'd recommend going with a GTX480 or GTX580 over the 5970 any day. I haven't heard of any complaints recently but I know the 5970 was plagued with driver problems, and single GPU setups are almost always *simpler* to maintain.
HDD: Get two Samsung F3 1TB drives for storage, and perhaps an SSD as your boot drive?
PSU: Get an XFX Black Edition 850w, cheaper and just as good if not better.
Mobo: I don't see anything wrong with those.
OS: Perfect.
RAM: Let's see, I'd recommend 8GB for your use, no more. I'm not quite up to date with all the latest in RAM, having made a pretty bad choice myself, so I'll let someone else take care of this. Just, make sure it's no more than 8GB and no less than 6GB.
Sound Card: Don't need it. Those boards have integrated sound don't they?
Cooling: That should be fine to push a 930 to 950 standards.

Happy building!

No problem Glad to help!
As far as RAM, I know I didn't give much detail, but from what I've read, be wary of the Corsair Dominator series, decent RAM but super overpriced. And I've heard lots of good things from Mushkin.
Stay away from Kingston, I know from experience it can't even hold it's rated spec without crazy high QPI voltage.

Since i7's go with tri-channel memory, I'd suggest 6GB then. Also the 580 are generally better (but also more expensive) than the 480's. I seem to remember about 10-30% improvement in performance (depending on game etc)?

The 5970 outperforms both, but comes with all of the problems that Crossfire has. i.e. it won't do so in every game, and has some small amount of micro-stuttering.

So basically, in a 5970, you get a card that is in some ways better (many ways, a lot better) and some ways worse. People argue over how that balances out. Also, as suggested before, I'd suggest a 930 instead of a 950 if you also plan on getting a good aftermarket cooler and overclocking.

To be honest, if you're not after every last bit of performance (and so aren't overclocking) the difference between the two cards shouldn't be that noticeable unless you actively compare the two. An i7 is (largely) an i7 with respect to speed - in a whole different world to your "average" processor.

Oh and uh, what about my Casing and compatibility?

Thanks for all the help guys! I really appreciate it.
Also, just about every motherboard today comes with built-in sound. Unless you're really looking for quality of sound, your motherboard should be good enough for 99% of things you'll ever need it for.

So would the Coolermaster V8 be considered a good cooler?
The i7-950 has dropped in price a lot so it's worth getting now, that's why so many are choosing it recently, myself included. Using a Noctua D14 as the cooler is recommended by many, both the HAF X and HAF 932 have the clearance for it from my memory. You need low profile RAM for it though and the Mushkins are low clearance with their heatsinks on where as the dominators you have to remove the tops, get 6GB or 12GB for triple channel. Again like the others, the GTX 580 is great and wont come with the micro stutter of the 5970, you can of course wait for the 69xx series. Definitely get a good quality 850W PSU and yep the Samsung F1 drives are great for the money, a small SSD bootdrive would be great too.

Been reading a lot and got good advice from members of another forum, so it's good to pass it on .

i7-950
GTX 580 or 69xx
Mushkin 6/12GB 1600MHz RAM unless you want RAM rated for 2000MHz
Noctua NH-D14
Samsung F1 1TB x2
60-128GB SSD (lot's of choice I'm getting a Mushkin myself, but Kingston, Crucial bla bla list goes on, a Sandforce 1200 SSD will sort you out)
Your mobo and case etc all look good, good luck with it!

Okay so now after more research, this is going to be (mostly) my final build.

CPU:i7-950
Mobo: (Gigabyte EX58A-UD5 or Asus Rampage 3?)
GPU: GTX 580
HDD: 2x1TB Samsung F3 in raid + 60-128GB SSD
PSU: (Corsair HX850 850W or Silverstone P-100W)
OS: Win7 Home Premium x64
RAM: (Mushkin Enhanced Radioactive 6GB?)
Case: Coolermaster HAFX
Cooler: Noctua NH-D14

I still need help with the ones in italics.

Oh, and before I forget, I saw another build on these forums where someone bought 2 NZXT 200mm fans. Do I need fans as well? If I do, I was looking at Gentle Typhoons AP-15.

Hmm the italics.

MoBo: You can read reviews comparing them, from what I've seen many build on the Asus Rampage 3 and not many on the UD5 although the UD7 is widely used. Not that that's much help! The Rampage 3 is a solid choice though, the choice may be as arbitrary as colour or price .
PSU: The HX850 will sort you out! Unless you want the option to upgrade to more power hungry parts with the same PSU, you'll be fine.
RAM: Mushkin Radioactives are a solid choice, you could choose the ridgeback redlines or the normal redlines if you wanted to match the red on the Rampage 3. Mushkin RAM is solid so any choice from the ridgeback or frostbyte heatsinks will be good. To make it clearer the normal redlines and the radioactives use the frostbyte heatsink, and ridgeback is a newer heatsink, so choose the colour you like and the speed/timings . 6GB 1600MHz then any heatsink/colour you want will be fine!

Sorry if I waffle on, I type the way I speak hope that helps!
