intel i7 920 vcore question

Thread Starter
does anyone know the default vcore for an i7 920?

i have the older version, the D0 i believe it is.-

i cant seem to find it online.

the reason i ask is i havent touched my bios in a LOONG time and i cant remember how i got to the overclock i have at the moment. i mean, i can see my current settings but i cant remember why i set them like that.

my vcore is at 1.125 and i am running a 3.6GHZ overclock. is that even higher than stock? i thought stock was 1.250. am i undervolting??

Vcore is set by the chip. All vcores are different per chip.

Stock is usually 1.25 but just take note of ur current settings and reset bios to defaults. That should show you what particular voltage ur chip is stock.

some chips only need a small amount, for example, my vid is 1.2 @ 2.66ghz but im running 4ghz at 1.164v so its possible.

wow thats sweet. im guessing the relationship of vcore to heat isnt constant from chip to chip? like if you graph the stock voltage and heat as 0,0 and add the change in temperature as you add voltage, the graphs will all be different, right? (assuming the same cooler)

that would be an interesting graph to see. or maybe graph (clock speed, rise in heat) in the (x, y)

if i started a thread and took (clock speed, vcore, temperature) on an (x, y, z) plane would anyone find that interesting?

actually it's already been done

an increase in clock speed with the same voltage increases heat in a linear fashion

an increase in voltage with the same clock speed increases heat EXPONENTIALLY. there u go

oh nice. so if you run like 1.4 vcore with no overclock it will be HOTTER than if you run 1.4 vcore with a decent overclock, like 4.2ghz?

vid can go upto 1.375v and lowest i have seen is 1.15. I would like to see heat increase without voltage increase. PROOF! only 2 things can make heat increase and those are voltage and amperage, neither are constant, but if you keep voltage constant, and push frequency and the chip demands more amperage, you are doing the same thing, just very dangerously. let me state this there is a 100amp jump from idle to load on these processors at stock@max vid, from 45amps idle to 145amps load, it defines the loadline spec for the socket, voltage drops during this increase over a short time period to allow for the processor to be within thermal spec of 130watts at 80% load at max vid of 1.375. P=IV.

i dont think anyone was saying that heat would increase without a voltage increase. we were comparing constant voltage (on an overvolted CPU) temps with a varying clock speed. AKA 1.3 vcore with a speed of 2.6ghz vs. 1.3 vcore with a speed of 4.0ghz

and now you have seen a 1.164 and a 1.125 vcore =) mines set at 1.125 and im running 3.4 or 3.6 ghz (cant remember) and i run prime 95 all the time.

i use prime95 when my room is cold and i want to heat it up =P

strange, possibly, but true.
