Blu-ray, HD-DVD Will Never Merge

Quote:
It looks like talks have once again failed between the HD-DVD and Blu-ray camps. I think that there is a massive rude awakening coming for both camps because right now, thanks to neither side giving an inch, the only loser is the consumer.

"We are not talking and we will not talk," Kazuhiro Tsuga, an executive officer at Matsu****a, the world's largest consumer electronics maker, told Reuters in an interview. "The market will decide the winner." Matsu****a, best known for its Panasonic brand, is a leading supporter of Blu-ray, one of two competing formats for the next-generation DVD.

is there a physical differance between the two or is it somehting that a firmware hack/update (obv in the future when we all have blueray roms) could solve?

I guess I'm not suprised. Like the article points out, this is similar to the Betamax v. VHS battle of the 80s. Hell, I still remember going to the rental store, when I was a kid, and there would be TWO sections of identical videos! Sony made the error last time, perhaps they learned from that experience?!?

Anyways, I wonder how long both of these technologies will survive before one takes over the other... a matter of years(?).

Who is ready to competely repurchase their DVD collection??

yes blu-ray and HD-DVD are popular for the similarity wit the VHS episode some decades ago. This news is actually months old. It is estimated that after a few months of analysis of sales the losing product will throw in the towel.

Im excited. . .i will be able to (eventually) back up my entire music collection on one DVD. . . they can have a season of tv shows, dvd quality on one disk. HD movies is enough to sell me. . . if there were one format i would probably be one of the dumbasses paying to get it first, flaws and all.

It would take approx 27 single layer Blu-ray disks to back up my anime collection. Boy, cant wait til they release a 30 layer Blu-ray disk..

i think its too much. Imagine how long it will take to burn and if the disc ruins....bye bye data. The average DVD today only lasts a maximum of a few months.
