Ibex - i5 QC "almost" passively cooled acrylic scratch HTPC - Updated 21.02.2012 - Page 3

Finally the long overdue update!

5 Cutting begins!

The first pic shows what I got done 2 weeks ago

Everything else I did this weekend:

Mobo tray with standoffs and a 2nd layer of plexi to make it stronger:

Then I covered the plexi with some painters-masking tape (had to get rid of the original protection-layer - it didn´t give a lot of protection on my last project and I want to avoid all the polishing )

Some plexi-cubes which will be used to join the sides together later on:

Then I made a template over which the curved side-panel will be bent:

Tape mod:

And the rest of the panels covered with masking tape:

And spots marked where those beautiful black screws will be

Well this is it for now!

Cheers!

So it's gonna be TOTALLY passive huh?
Well, all i can say is that will be one hot bugger :/
The vid card has a fan?
That cooler isnt NEARLY as big enough to keep your quad cool passively.
have fun!

I was gonna say...if your so picky about having a VERY quiet CPU fan, why did you get a 5750 with a reference-style cooler? I know you already got it, but here.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814131346

Same power, completely silent, wicked looking heatsink.

But other then that, great looking build! Love to see more people venturing into smaller rigs then massive ones!

that cooler going be 2 heavy use bolts and a ali back brace. bolt through the board and perspex to a brace to hold the weight.
could you shorten the 24 pin cables so they not looped round and sticking out your case would look better.

I´ll try to make it totally passive - maybe I´ll have to add a fan - I don´t know yet, as I haven´t tried powering it up till now.
And the vid card has a fan. It is extremely quiet - I´ve got 2 of it´s bigger brothers im my main rig and they are inaudible.
So if I have to add a fan, I´ll have to find a way to make it almost invisible - maybe a 90mm fan blowing straight upwards??

That´s what I´m going to do! You can see the second sheet of acrylic and the drilled and countersunk holes for the bolts in these 2 pics.

And for the cables: They are part of my design-idea - so I wont shorten them

Nope - but I´ll do this before adding the last bent piece of acrylic - and I´ll let you know about the temperatures!

Cheers

A small update:

6) Some sleeving

Started to prepare and sleeve the 24 pin extension I got:

Used some cardboard as a template and started right there:

That´s how the first pair of cables will bend:

Prepped with black electric tape and sleeved with mdpc-x´s awesome grand bleu sleeve!

And just comparison how long the wires were originally:

PS: Only one end was heatshrinked because the other one has to go through the curved side-panel (if possible each one through it´s own hole).

More to come stay tuned!

Cheers

7) Mobo-tray and Blue-ray support

Another update!

There ade only a few pics because I totally forgot to take pictures during the process of drilling and tapping :/

Here are the pics - pieces are just held together by a few nails stuck into the holes:

You can see the 4 bolts which will hold the cooler in this pic (will be a close fit - but I think it will work):

Sorry for only 5 pics - was in a hurry and got carried away!

I´ll get more next time!

Cheers
