My friends Xbox hdd is broken and I have a 10gb drive just sitting around, I was wondering if anyone knows of a good tutorial to copy the os over and install a new drive? I have looked up some stuff, do I need a modchip? I am new to this and dont really have any idea where to start. Any help is appreciated

You're going to want a modchip. Even if you can get the XBox to recognize the hard drive through a softmod technique, that's an extra hoop you would have to jump through. With a mod chip installed, you can replace the hard drive and it will behave exactly like the normal hard drive.

If the original hard drive is truly broken, I don't know how you could extract the OS and save games off of it to copy onto the new drive. Chances are that that is all gone. The easiest thing to do then is to use Slayer's EvoX auto-installer, which is a CD that self-boots in the XBox, formats the drive, and installs the EvolutionX dashboard and many handy utilities in the XBox mod scene. You can read more about EvoX on xbox-scene.com.
