Extreme Novice Needing Advice on PC Build

Thread Starter
So I had posted a build on here a while back, and never actually went through with building it. Since then I have made a couple of changes as to my build, and am curious about what y'all think of it.

Case: LIAN LI PC-60FNWX Black Aluminum ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

Now I will be using this build for just about everything. Work, gaming, leisure activities, etc. I would like it to be able to play high end games for at least a few years before needing to upgrade any part, or adding to it.

If you could let me know what you think, or would suggest that would be great!

Thanks,
Gohan_Nightwing

Are you gonna overclock? Also what's the budget?

Seems like a very future proof rig to me

You said you're an extreme novice? I approve of much of it, good job! The i7 950 is now going for $200 at Microcenter, it's a no-brainer.

Although, it might not be a bad idea to wait until mid-December for the AMD 69xx cards. Early leaks are showing fantastic price points and performance. I'm talkin' possibly around $400 for >5870.

And speaking of waiting, if it's not an urgent built, there's always the recommendation of waiting for the Sandy Bridge processors from Intel first quarter of 2011. They kick the current series' ass. This is much less important than waiting for the 69xx, I'd say; so if it's too unbearable, only wait into December

I would get your HX750 from newegg. I just got mine for 100ish shipped. Other than that, it looks good. Although I would go with something like a XPC Rasta kit or somthing at the price of an h70. It will perform better and give you future upgrade options.

Edit - HX750 was 149.99-30.00instant-20mir, so about 100ish after its said and done. Although you missed out on the deal..

5870 is way overpriced for what it is now, go get the new 6870 for a lot cheaper. Or better yet you could get two 6850's for about the same price of the 5870 and destroy it performance wise.

5870 about $330-$370
6870 about $250-$270
6850 about $200

Standard overclock the 6870 is right on par with the 5870.
http://quickreviewz.com/radeon-6870-...70-vs-gtx-470/

or like I said two 6850s destroy the 5870

Thank you all for the quick and helpful responses. hahah and EfemaN yea I'm a pretty big newb. All those components I chose took me several months to widdle down to what you see now. I started out with a bunch of non-compatible stuff and had to ask so many questions... Thankfully I have a couple of friends who have really helped me understand this stuff a little better.

To AceDeAce: I may try and Overclock, I certainly have no experience whatsoever on that, so if I do, I will have a friend who knows how close by hahaha. Thanks also for the advice on how quality cooling units increase my CPUs life.

To EfemaN: I think on an older post somewhere I read that the 950 comes more non-overclocker experienced friendly, is that true? Also, that does sound great about both the new CPU and GPU! I can definitely wait, hahah I may have to. College loan payments are starting to hit hahaha.

To Kyle5281: Rats! hahah I hate how those deals go by so quickly. I honestly have no idea what a Rasta kit is. Is it another CPU cooler? If so, is it liquid or fan?

To Shadowclock: That is a most helpful chart! Thank you! I think I heard that the 6870 does 3d graphics as well, is that true?

Also, I just noticed something rather odd. The i7930 that I posted that link to used to be 179.99, then it sky-rocketed back to 350 over night?! How can that happen!

129, but much better and upgradable water cooling. Altough you must have some common sense, its pretty easy considering they give you everything you need. Although there is a greater chance of leaking. Post in watercooling for alot more info from experts.

EDIT:
BTW- I7 950 is on sale at microcenter for 200usd.

Time to make a day trip to Texas!
To those of you that have, I wouldn't be recommending liquid cooling beyond a closed loop like the H70 for him now. It's fantastic to learn, but people have to start small and actually build a rig or two first

Gohan_Nightwing: The processors are going to be no different in the sense of being "friendly." Some might overclock better than others, but that's only in the sense that they'll go higher clocks without feeding extra voltage. The process is the same.
If I was in your position, I'd definitely wait for the new video cards, and even the new processors. It'll make the build that much better.

EDIT: As far as the price changes, couldn't tell ya... I'd check with the store, they should be selling them at the low price still. However, the upgrade to the 950 is totally worth $20.

EDIT2: Looking over the other posts again. The H70 will be great in cooling capability; the Rasta kit they speak of is a collection of parts to begin water cooling. Although that takes more... umph than I'd recommend for an early builder.

+rep means you love me

Thank you both! hahah and I would plus rep you both but how do I do that? hahahah. Hrmmm. I may just have to have to wait after all... I do wish I had the know how for that Rasta kit since it would be better, but better safe than sorry I suppose. The new CPU's and GPU's when they come out, how high do you think they will be priced?
