My new 950 is in action

Thread Starter
I installed it last night. I wish I could have left work earlier than 9:30pm so I could have done some good benchmarks. If I have to install a TT big typhoon one more time, I'm gonna puke. Anyway, I have learned that the 950 is power hungry compared to the P4 640. At stock it likes 1.325. I brought it up to 4.51Ghz last night and it wouldn't take anything less than 1.4 which of course wants to start a fire. I glanced through the manual/foldout pamphlet that came with cpu, and they state 38°c is ambient temp for this chip????
Does anyone know what the temperatures the 950 can handle? At 4.3ghz at 1.3625v running occt and FAH, I'm aroung 52-55°c. I may just have to sign on for WC now. If I get out of work early enough, I'll post some screenies hopefully in the 4.5-4.75GHZ range

i still wish I could figure out what the hell the deal is with mine, I'm stuck @ 4.6. Any higher and it won't load Windows. I'm going to try a couple short boots @ 1.6v and if that helps any then I'm going to do the vcore mod. If not, the only thing I can guess is it's my motherboard, if that's the case then I guess I need the 975x.

Aqualan, can you get above 275FSB?

Not yet, I tried 275 last night and It locked even before loading windows.

265 is my highest successful boot yet.

Its not the board, that board is known to be good much farther then that without mods. I still think that your CPU is the issue, and Im sure who ever had it before you either took the cherry out of it or got rid of it because it was a poor overclocker. I dont think it is the board especialy at 275 or higher. Ill toss my 950 in my 955 Premium when it arrives and see what it can do, but Im sure the board will not limit the overclock unless its got some serious droop like my E Premium had. BTW you sont want to go in the 1.6 range without water cooling, I wouldnt go past the 1.55 range unless it was water cooled but thats still pushing it in my book. Also you wont need a Vcore mod unless you plan to run some chilled water or a phase change system.

So does anyone know what temps are acceptable on the 950? Is it the same as prescott 640 (55°c)?

I think the thermal spec for the 950 is 67 or 68C, thats what the actual CPU will start to throttle at, but your board might read it as 65c or 70c kinda depends on the actual board, some read hotter some read cooler. If you wanted to chance it and see what the CPU throttles at on your board just simply up the voltage, run a torture test or 2 and check for throttling on a program called throttle watch, that way you will know if your board is reading high or low.

Well hello dolly, I thought I was nearing the top with 55°c, I have plenty of room to heat that baby up. 4.75ghz here I come!

Do you have a B1 or C1 stepping?

Also, if you asked me, not bad for a 265fsb with only a 1.4Vc. That's what? A 1.1ghz overclocked? Well, the 920 with a 1.2ghz overclocked used the same ammount of Vc or higher I think.

I'm thinking in a 950 but I'm going to wait for a 960, time flies.

As for temps? I'd say no more than 55c with the BT at full load but then again it depends what stepping you have under the hood.

BTW, did you spread AS5 all over the heat-sink? Because Preslers cores are a bit appart from each other so it's a good idea to put the AS5 all over instead of putting the little rice grain size on it.

Goo luck with the 275fsb and also, take some SS, we'd like to see it.

It's B1. What's the difference?
