Thanks a lot for this guide. I read it before I did my mod (see sig) and it gave me the basics of spray painting! I'm really thankful to you for doing this biggrin.gif

Nice guide covered everything I was wanting to know. In the process of sanding and prepping my latest case mod project for some paint and this set me in the right direction. For some reason I kept thinking you has to sand it down to bare metal but only if it has a textured surface and you want a smooth finish. The paint on the case I am working on is pretty smooth just really thick from the factory. It is one of those older 90s cases white box you know and paint is so thick. Gonna get a mouse sander to speed up sanding on the panels but now I know I just need a good scuff up should save lots of time. Hardest part is getting in between small areas of the panels where there are lips and such but shouldn't be too hard just need more sand paper.

Since the interior is bare metal guess I just need a quick scuff up before painting.

Hey first of all great tutorial, i just have a few questions to clear up my confusion at some parts.
First of all what is considered a textured surface?
I plan on painting my NZXT apollo
nzxt_apollo_black_big.jpg
Does this have any? It seems like just painted metal and a plastic front. So im a little unsure as to what is meant?

I plan on painting it white on the inside which is bare metal. So is slightly rough the inside then a primer sealer then a semi gloss white?

And as for the outside I plan on getting a blue similar to yours in your tutorial (maybe not so candy but a metallic of sorts). So i sand the outside with 400 grit (after prep ofcourse) clean, then apply primer sealer, and this is the part im confused about? must i apply some sort of undercoat before applying the colour i choose? or can i just got from my primer to metallic blue? then apply a clear?

Also as a last question. Do i treat the plastic on the front the same as if i was painting the outside metal? will i get the same colour/ result?

I know alot of this was covered int he first 2 posts but i would just like to clarify these things as this will be my first paint job and id like to get it right. Thanks for your patients.

First off Thanks.
The textured surface would feel kinda like the surface of a basket ball. If it is smooth then just prep and paint.
You can use either 400 grit or a scotch brite pad. Once surface if prepared plastic and metal spray with couple coats of non-sanding sealer (not to heavy) let dry to touch (about 1 hr) tack off surface and go straight to paint (no sanding required). once color is dry to touch tack off again and spray with clear.

:side note: Make sure it's primer sealer, if yo use primer surfacer it will need sanded before paint.

Sit back and say "I did that"!
