First Serious Gaming Build - Suggestions/Thoughts Appreciated

Thread Starter
So I convinced my fiance to let me build a new gaming rig after we purchased her a nice Canon T2i and a new laptop to go with it (Apparently, it a committed relationship it's all about leverage).

Anyways, I've received most of the parts and am just waiting on a couple pieces at this time. I plan to assemble the computer on 12/5 as that is my next day off of work (Yes I work overtime like a freak to pay for these things). I'll post pictures and specs then but for now here is the parts list:

ProcessorIntel i7 950
MotherboardASUS P6X58D-E
CaseCooler Master HAF X
Video CardEVGA GTX470 x2 for SLI
RAMCorsair Dominator 12GB (2GBx6)
PSUCorsair CMPSU-850HX Modular
Hard Drive500GB Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM x2 for Raid 0
SSDCrucial C300 120GB
Optical DriveASUS OEM DVD Burner x2 for no real reason
CPU CoolerCorsair H70
Memory CoolerCorsair CMXAF2

I bought things pieces at a time so I easily convinced myself of upgrades from my original plans and thus went quite a bit over budget. I think all told I ended up spending around $1800.

I appreciate the feedback and will post pictures once it is assembled!

Sweet! Can't wait for the final pics!

Are you going to paint or mod your HAF?

Solid list of parts, have fun! Though one question, why so much RAM? What will you be using it for? And will you have any theme in mind? Or are you going stock with everything?

One of the reasons for purchasing the HAF X was because of the painted black interior, I like to solid black look. I've seen mods of the side window but I don't necessarily know that I'm comfortable enough with my skill level to actually do case modification at this point.

I just sold my Asus P6X58D-E couple days ago and i gota say its one hell of a board for the money.

Im sort of sat here thinking....like...i paid almost double for this UD7 and im sort of wishing i had just kept the Asus and spent the extra on another ssd

I ran a 5870 crossfire and 8800gtx for physx with 6gb of 2000mhz kingston and an i7 stable at 4.3ghz with HT enabled with 1.35vcore in bios,i was pretty impressed

If i had to change anything on your list,id drop 6gb of the ram as i dont think your likely to need it seen as you have not specificaly stated that it will be used for VMware etc.

Edit: i see why you bought the 12gb i dont blame ya!,still you may actually find it better to sell on 6gb of that as i have heard that 12gb of ddr3 on that exact mobo can be a pain in the ass when overclocking.

I actually got a killer deal on the RAM, that's the only reason I purchased so much to be honest. 12GB of CL8 Dominator for $280 = can't go wrong imo.

Pretty much going to go stock appearance with everything but excited to see what I'm going to be able to do with actually overclocking the CPU and GPU.

One thing I definitely want to change out however is the fact that all my parts are black/blue and the default lighting on the HAF X is red. That certainly needs to be corrected, LOL.
