WD20EARS vs. WD20EURS

Thread Starter
What are the main differences between the two drives?

One is a 2.0TB Caviar Green, the other is a 2.0TB AV-GP, which is A/V Green Power.

They both spin slowly, make little noise and consume little electricity.

So what's the diff?

EDIT: Changed WD20EVDS to EURS to match the EARS' 64MB cache.

The A/V drives ignore errors, the normal drives will do an error recovery to attempt to get back any data from the platter.

When recording video (security cameras etc) you want an A/V drive that will just record whatever you throw at it, and keep going even if it misses a byte or two. An error in a couple of bytes just causes a minor blip in the video stream, but the rest won't stop. On a normal drive it could go into an error recovery mode and stop recording for 10-30 seconds - and this is much worse for security.

However if you store documents, a single byte error could corrupt megabytes or even gigabytes of important data.

Which you choose depends on your purpose...

Enlightened.

Thanks much, +REP.

My purpose would be to store data and my many hours of videos so this is the right choice. Thanks!

physically I don't think there is much difference (and this is all but confirmed by the pricing, as they are pretty much the same price as their standard desktop equivalents).

The drives are effectively the standard units with TLER set to 0 - ie the controller will give up trying to correct an error instantly, unlike a RAID edition drive that will try for ~7 seconds or a standard drive that will try for upwards of 30 seconds in some cases. I doubt they are binned any differently to the standard drives either.
