what BIOS settings for SSD?

Thread Starter
I was curious what (if any) BIOS settings you guys change for a SSD? I have an OCZ 180GB and I was wondering if I should switch the drive mode from IDE to ACHI? I have not installed an OS yet, I want confirmation before I do, thanks.

Yep make sure it's ACHI.
Also here's a handy guide for setting up / tweaking your new SSD

quick question, when you set ACHI in the BIOS does that then set ALL of your storage SATA drives to ACHI mode?

I have 3 drives; SSD, HDD, and optical drive. Will all 3 be ACHI?

before you do so, you have to configure windows to use ahci. google "change windows to ahci" and you'll find instructions on changing the registry to work with ahci.

as far as what drives it will effect, it will depend on your motherboard. it will change all the on chip sata ports to ahci, but some motherboards have a second separate controller that it may not effect.

I have an asus p7p55d-e motherboard. Would you recommend that I turn ACHI on?

I have 3 drives. Also, there is no OS installed, so I don't think I need to tell windows 7 anything. I could be wrong.

turn it on, and install will be fine. it's just if you install under ide or sata mode, windows configures itself for ide or sata, changing to ahci will give you blue screen upon boot without changing the registry.

but for a fresh install, no changes needed.

What's the difference when changing it to achi? I think I kept mine on SATA. From what I read achi is used for TRIM support. My SSD doesn't support TRIM though so I think I'm good, no?

I've ran benchmarks and my speeds are as advertised ( ~220mb read, ~70mb write )

Your numbers seem pretty good for that SSD. Let others chime in and see what they say

In theory you should get better performance from using AHCI over IDE mode but I wouldn't like to say if that would be so with your particular hardware. However just to clear up the misconception TRIM can work in IDE mode, see this previous thread discussing it.
