Got my XFX 6600GT back from RMA

Thread Starter
I had another thread about this but I wanted to start another. I had sent my card in for RMA due to a noisy fan (it was trying to impersonate Air Force 1). They tested it and said it was NORMAL!!!. So I have it back now and I have a new cooler sitting here to put on Sunday.

I bought the Zalman ZM80D-HP. Besides the cool way it looks with gold plated heat pipes, I have just the right thermals in my case to make it work nicely. So FAN FAN GO AWAY!!!

Another note about this card. It comes with a 500mhz GPU and 1GHZ DDR3. It overclocks up to 570MHZ and 1.13GHZ just using the coolbits utility. All the while it stays at 42 c (whether it is overclocked or not). Now my question is two fold. My brother has the Gigabyte 6600Gt .....the one that takes two slots and has that input vent in the back and no fan. His card stays at 31c all the time. He has a great case with super temps on everything. So maybe when I get a real motherboard with a real chipset mine will be that way too?

My other question is....aren't all 6600gt cards supposed to have the same gpu? I see some that are 400MHZ and others that are 500. I realize the memory is all different but I would thing the GPU for the 6600gt would standard?

I guess I have three questions. Do you people use coolbits to overclock or Rivatuner? Is there any significant difference in doing it once place or the other?

Anyway........it is really nice to have it back......the GMA900 integrated on this trash intel board really sucked.

So....all comments welcomed.....thanks!!

i believe that the GPU is dependant on who manufactures the card

They have the same cores, but some manufacturers get dibs on the better batches (big names, XFX, BFG, eVGA), so these ones overclock better.

Are those OC numbers that I am getting on my video considered good? This is the first Nvidia card I've bought since the 5200FX.

I use coolbits, because it is the simplest way to overclock a nvidia card and then I use ATiTool, latest beta, to scan for artifacts for 10-15mins and to see how hot my GPU gets.

I am pretty sure there is no difference when overclocking with one program or another.

Edit: Yes, you have great overclocking settings for your 6600GT; extra 70mhz on GPU and 130mhz on memory is nice.

Should I try to take it higher? Those are just the automatic detection numbers.

Sure just monitor temps (try to keep under 80C, although some cards do peak into 90's) and make sure to run benchmarks (Aquamark4,3dmark01,03,05,06) or play some graphic heavy games to test for stability and artifacts, every 5-10mhz of overclocking. If the game/benchmark crashes or you notice artifacts, "white dots, blurry unusual shapes, lines, etc." then just lower frequencies and try again.
