sandy bridge & bulldozer questions

Thread Starter
i have a couple grand saved up to get a new sandy bridge and probable also a bulldozer cpu/mobo/mem combo.

sandy bridge is gunna be out Jan 5th i beleive, but its the socket 1155 version right?

does anyone know whats up with socket 2011? the socker 1155 stuff though prbably alot faster than my i7 930 doesn't really do it more me if i know if i wait a bit i can get a sovket 2011 q/ quad channel mems ect. also heard socket 2011 has sata controller on chip, so in a raid thing the system mems can be used, witch sounds really cool. also heard it will take sas drives.

When will AMD's bulldozer be available? judging from the low price of the 2600k $320 bulk, i would assume intel thinks the bulldozer is gunna be pretty good or they would have charged more for their top of the line chip.

kinda trying to budget for whats coming up. in the end i want a top of the line system from AMD or INTEL, whoever offers the most for a reasonable amount of money and a pretty good rig from the other manufacturer.

so dive into socket 1155 jan 5th, or wait for either bulldozer or socket 2011?

thanks for the help.

Bulldozer will be out Q2 2011. Nobody knows the exact date. Same with Ivy Bridge, although most people are saying Q3 or Q4 2011.

If I were you, I would wait for Bulldozer and then compare BD's performance with Sandy Bridge. Waiting for Ivy Bridge seems like too long a stretch for you.

Personally, I'm waiting for PCIe 3.0 before I upgrade platforms.
The first chips that will come out for sandy bridge will be the mainstream chips and not the enthusiast chips. The 980X is being held as the top enthusiast chip well through the beginning of sandy bridge. If you want an upgrade, then find a 980X and save the rest of your money.

The upgrades of things like PCIe 3.0 will be nice, but honestly it's not going to be a huge increase in performance; it will be the new gpu that fully uses pcie 3.0 that gives you the boost.

Honestly, bulldozer is almost exclusively rumors with very few real specs or benchmarks and sandy bridge is not going to put out a replacement for the 980X until they release the enthusiast chips.

If you want an upgrade 980X it is.

Edit: Found the picture I was looking for.

The 980X is a 6 core chip for 1366

IMO Sandy bridge is going to be AWESOME. I'm waiting for a P65 board with a NF200 for 8 X 8 X 8 SLI. Toss that in with a 4.5Ghz 2500K and it all means > 1366

In all likelihood, Bulldozer and Ivy will be released pretty darn close. Q2 2011 presumes no delays, and presumes that BD 1 is not as problematic as Phenom 1. I'll bet money there are delays on BD CPUs. I'd like to be wrong on those statements, but AMD is going to a new process and architecture a recipe for problems and/or delays.

People have been advising to wait for BD since August, and at best BD probably won't be here till around next August. A full year of being just around the corner.

PCiE3 really doesn't bring much to the table. We still barely need x8 2.0 nevermind x16 2.0

I swear some of you guys don't know what your talking about. Ivy bridge is a die shrink not new architecture, just like Westmere. In reality Westmere is really Nehalem at 32nm. Its highy highly unlikely that Ivy bridge will even show its face in 2011. Remember Intel's cycle. We are in tick phase where Intel delievers a die shrink to the current architecture. Sandy Bridge will be a tock, followed by Ivy Bridge (tick). My guess is Ivy Bridge won't show up until 2012.

I would be willing to take that bet. How much?
