i7 990x Workstation build proposal

Thread Starter
Hi Everyone

Long term browser, first time poster. Wanted to get some advice for another workstation build for our small startup that I'll put together soon (most likely when the 990x is out). Budget is about 4-5K. I'm not a pro, so any advice is welcomed

Our tools use 6 threads and 18 gig of ram and run on redhat 5 (using additional threads add overhead for no gain, hence no sr2 build). Generally OS + swap + development files run about 100 gig, files that can go on a slow drive take up 300 gig. I have spare cpus/computers so I'm not too worried about the risk of blowing one, however losing an HD is much more of a hassle (hence I'm moving away from RAID 0). The estimated lifespan also only has to be a year, so i'm not worried about the long term effects of overclocking.

*Previous Build* (Air Cooled):
i7-980x @ 4.3GHz (1.4V)
24 gig of trident + turbulence II DDR3-2000 8-9-8-20
Asus p6td deluxe (not the best choice)
3x Crucial C300 128 gig drives in HW RAID 0 (LSI 9260-4i card controlling)
1x 1TB 7200rpm "backup drive"
Nvidia 9500gt (cheapest dual dvi nvidia card I could find)

*Proposed New Build* (Water cooled):
i7-990x @ 4.8GHz (Yes I know it's not released yet, if I can't wait for the 990x I'll get the 980x)
24 gig of Kingston HyperX DDR3-2000
Gigabyte UD9 mobo
4x Crucial C300 128 gig drives in SW Raid 10 (buy a HW card when a new one comes out that supports trim)
2 x 1TB in SW Raid 1
Any cheap dual dvi output nvidia card
Danger den double wide 21 series case
HK3 waterblock, black ice 480 radiator

- I changed to SW RAID as I can't see any HW RAID cards that support trim, I never utilize all 12 threads on the cpu anyway, so I'm assuming this won't be a performance hit.

Questions:

1. Am I wrong about the raid setup would I be better off with:

- stay with the ssd's but use a raid card that doesn't support trim (like before) and wait for a hw raid card that does support trim
- move to a HW raid 10 setup with 6 or 8 velociraptors
- move to a HW raid 10 setup with 6 or 8 SAS drives
- if I do use a HW raid card, do any of them have quicker boots? My 3 year old XP machine boots before my "beast" even gets to grub

2. Is one 480 radiator enough for the water cooling? Is there any reason to go with dual 480s given that I've got tons of space in the case?

3. Should I bother water cooling the chipset on the UD9?

4. Should I bother getting a HW nic to avoid loading the processor? (I assume not as I'm not fully loading the cpu anyway)

Thanks!

Stren!

Wait wait, you're telling me you have 3 C300 128gb SSDs in raid 0 and it boots slower than your 3 year old xp machine? How is that possible?!

The combined boot time of the motherboard bios + the raid card bios is slower than my other computer's motherboard bios + complete xp boot from a raptor drive. Yes apples to apples, the ssd's would beat the raptor, but the raid card really slows down the boot time like crazy, hence my whining

That build looks amazing, don't get me wrong, but I don't understand why you chose the UD9. It doesn't look like you'll be using 1/4 of its features so its just wasted money on something you'll never use.

Despite one of my other threads, I would actually wait for Sandy Bridge. It's coming out in a couple of months, and I doubt the 990X is even going to be released. The $350 chip faired better than the 980X in benchmarks, so it's going to be a dream. You can spend the rest of that money on graphics cards or something to keep you distracted while you "work".

What I would probably do for the HDD setup:

- One ~60-100GB SSD for the OS (or OS and development files) attached right to the ICH10R

- One fast PCI-E SSD in the ~120GB range for development and swap space, or just swap.

- Four, fast, 7200 RPM drives (or velociraptors if you the random access performance is worth the cost), attached to the other ICH10R ports in RAID 10, for your "slow files".

Another option would be two PCI-E SSDs, one for swap and the other for development/OS and six drives in RAID 10 on the ICH10R.

RAID 0, 1, and 10 don't need any parity calculations, so overhead is very minimal and the ICH10R RAID should not be much slower than a HW card, unless you really need more than six drives. The ICH10R is good for upwards of 400-450MB/s.

Also, I would personally be wary of relying on 24GiB of non-ECC memory on a serious job with such a huge amount of data being worked on for an extended period of time. ECC memory is much slower, but shouldn't reduce overall system performance by too much and it might be worth the extra reliability. Problem is that ECC memory would require a Xeon (there are X980 equivalents) and a board with the BIOS settings to enable ECC.

If you do go with standard non-ECC make sure you stress test the crap out of it for a good long time and verify it's error free before you do anything with it that can't tolerate errors/corruption.
