EVGA GTX 580 Basic Cooling Modifications

Thread Starter
I am currently working in a warmer ambient environment than I was last night. OEM TIM was spread surprisingly thin (good). Replaced with a slightly thicker layer of Shin-Etsu X23-7783D. Hard to work with, but managed using the finger/plastic wrap spread method + anhydrous isopropyl (MG Chemicals) + premium coffee filter + heat gun.

Last night: 910/4200 (1 hour) idle @ 1.138v = 64C + Fan Speed = 51%
Currently: 910/4200 (1 hour) idle @ 1.138v = 60C + Fan Speed = 49%

Replacing the TIM has lowered temps by a conservative 4C . This is without the high-flow bracket installed...YMMV!

I've never replaced tim before. Why do you need coffee filter anyway?

Because they are lint-free and soft enough not to scratch the metal surfaces being wiped. I figure the high-flow bracket (to be installled later today) to be good for 1C-2C and the backplate (available in December) to be good for another 1C-2C, depending on case flow. I'm looking for 910/4200 1.1380v - 1.1505v (voltages are not fixed, but are set between these min and max values) idle at 55C-58C with ambients between 70F-75F. Those idle temps may appear high unless you understand that my box is set to where the OC is fixed and does not adaptively downclock (PerfLevelSrc=0x2222). Shin-Etsu MicroSi will be getting back to me on X23-7783D cure times (if any) later today...

As mentioned previously, those idle temps may appear high unless you understand that my box is set to where the OC is fixed (910/4200 1.1380v - 1.1505v) and does not adaptively downclock (PerfLevelSrc=0x2222). GPU-Z on Windows will show between 40C-42C at 70F-75F with an adaptive downlock (1 hour min idle).
