My system is showing 4x PCI Express instead of 16x, please help!

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

Well, I just switched one of my 460's over to another slot to help with temps.

I have the Asus P6t mobo and it should have 3 PCI Express x16 slots...

Now for some reason every program I use (gpu z, everest) is stating that it is in 4x mode...

Am I missing something??

Thanks!

The two blue x16 PCIe slots are electrically x16 PCIe.
The white x16 PCIe slot is electrically x4 PCIe.

Damn...

Would I see performance decrease now that it's 4x?

It's really stupid of Asus to put the 2nd PCIE 16x slot RIGHT next to the 1st one...I don't want my cards sandwiched together..

nope. if there is a difference, it will not be noticeable. (a couple frames at the most.)

there was an article comparing x16 and x4 with SLI/Crossfire, with 480s and 5870s IIRC, and the difference was close enough to be within the margin of error.

The more powerful GTX480 shows a 7% performance hit on x4 PCIe 2.0.

HardOCP did a series of 3 tests on PCIe 2.0 scaling (x16/x16 vs x16/x8 ; x16/x16 vs x8/x8 ; x16/x16 vs x4/x4) for SLI/CF setup.

The 1st test contains Galaxy GTX460 Superclocked in SLI and so it might worth reading for the OP. The 3rd test has x4/x4 and so it is also worth reading.

http://hardocp.com/article/2010/08/1...x16_vs_x16x8/1

http://hardocp.com/article/2010/08/2...16x16_vs_x8x8/

http://www.hardocp.com/article/2010/...x16x16_vs_x4x4

Basically, they found that for a single monitor setup (2560x1600 with AA enabled), even x4/x4 would not bottleneck a pair of GTX480s.
