custom entertainment center

Hey everybody...

I have an Xbox 360, Xbox, Gamecube, Dreamcast, and Super Nintendo (i have a few other consoles that I don't use). I want to make a custom entertainment center for these consoles, with places to put the games and controllers along with spaces for all of the consoles. I'm fixing up one of my rooms in the basement with a 40' tube (hella big.. hella nice, even though it's not HDTV ). I'm going to put a bad ass sound system in there, but I'm having one big problem.

Entertainment system.

Does anyone have any ideas on an all in one solution entertainment center? The TV will not go on top of it. What I figured was about 40 inches tall and 40 inches wide... the consoles will take up the right side with a 14 inch width (xbox is 11.5, give it some extra space.. and then 6 slots going horizontally, 6 in a piece.. which will fit all of the consoles).

The left part will have two shelves, the top shelf for games and the bottom for accessories.

Yea.. i really don't know.

This would be a good project to start .. I want about 2 weeks to complete this if anyone wants to input me on some ideas

Well, IMO thats easy as pie...I put 5 slots at the bottom just cause you named your main 5...I kinda like that the most...a slot for each system, then you could have those shelves for the games (like a dvd shelf) or you could put drawers under the consoles and put the games in those .

I'll subscribe to this thread and check your design ideas out-- have built many high-end E centers and have seen many more...figure out your budget so I don't get all lathered up and break out the gold leaf...lol

No diamonds please.

I think you need to use plywood...cheap and sturdy. thats my two cents...implement the bottom part, it might be worth it , or oooh! tweak it to where its like:

Wait a minute... You bought an XBOX 360 without having HDTV?

You should have waited till you had a HDTV and prob saved money on the 360. Their marketing got you I guess?

You just basically bought the xbox all over again. Xbox was the limit of what a traditional TV can do for game graphics.

Buying a XBox 360 and using a regular tube TV is like taking a AMD x2 with 7900GTX SLI cards decked out and using an Apple 2e monochrome monitor....but I digress....

Anyhow...
I suggest getting an HDTV before you expend anything on an entertainment center. (or plan for it in the design, because you will want one eventually) In otherwords build it in pieces incase one component changes you don't loose the whole thing. Do a home theater cabinet, a TV stand and a gaming cabinet (Or combine the game/HT cabinet into one) Also multiple pieces can be easier to move.

I suggest picking an entertainment cabinet/stand online to emulate the design using your own materials and work to save $$. Or do a price of materials compairson to something you could buy. If it's the same...just be lazy and buy something online. I got a great combo for just over $500 shipped. Very nice and well built if you ask me. If you want to see it check out the rig pictures page for me... I took a pic of my HDTV setup too as it's integrated w/ my PC. (I use wireless keyboard and mouse to play on my 50" HD DLP) It might also be a good idea for sometihng to build..looks easy enough to do. Use adjustable shelves if you are building and you can do it.

Might I suggest a cherry wood stain when you are done? It is a classic and timeless color scheme that matches all. Black paint is just becomming too common in entertainment systems so I've gone back to natural woods. Don't use plywood it will look as cheap as it cost and doesn't stain well. I suggest using regular lumber, it won't cost too much more than plywood.
