Geez now im only 27 but im starting to feel old...its been almost a year since I built a new rig off all spankin new tech, and since ive kinda been off the hunt for new stuff. I was amazed to see 6 and 8 core processors starting to be the main stead, and graphics cards that make my gtx 260 look like one of them 30$ cards you buy to get you by till your 1200$ watercooled bfg comes in. All im sayin is why dont we just wait till there a BIGGER jump in performance and technology before we come out with the next bigger and better thing...lol idk but things are getting out of control....and i kinda like it but still STFD technology before your shoe unties and you fall on your face

I like this post. However, I don't think you should see your 260 as a $30 card. Even cards like the "old" (I can't believe I said that) 4850 and 8800 GTs still run reasonably well. It's true technology is increasing rapidly, but that doesn't make the old stuff obsolete. I can see where yoru coming from, as I owned a GTX280. I sold it, bought my 5850, and I'll be happy for a long time to come. (Unless my FPS drops below 30...then I'll consider an upgrade).

Edit: My stance of being content probably comes from playing Command and conquer on IGPs for a long time, and sometimes getting as low as 4 FPS.

I used to try and keep up, but it is useless unless you have the money and time to fiddle with your rig constantly. Now I just upgrade when I need to, as in a program or game I am using could use a step up in order to perform adequately. I decided to skip the current i7 generation, because my computer does everything I need at the moment. My GTX 295 still plays all my games very well at 1920x1200, don't care about DX11 really. I'll probably keep my current configuration for another year and wait for a cheap Intel six core to come out. That will give me about 3 years on a video card and processor which I think is pretty good. Might get an SSD in the mean time which would be a noticeable upgrade for a relatively low amount of money compared to getting all new ram, cpu, and motherboard.

You aren't behind at all. The stuff coming out over the last year or so is merely feeding the growing market. Your rig is still very relevant.

It's the same reason CDs cost $15 when they are made for $1: people will buy them.

yeah I agree with my rig still being relivant...however it is in dire need of some upkeep...prob gonna go with a new case mo hard drives just cause i like to take up space...uhmmm and maybe a 2nd 260 since they are uber cheap on ebay...and belive it or not i did get a sli link with my card when i bought it lol. I might even spring for a new modular power supply because i want better cable management...i have a hard time routing the extra stuff i have now in a full atx case...and i want to go to a med atx....ehe i donno im moving to a bigger place soon so ill be doing a lot with multimedia and what not. but yeah thanks guys for the motivation to not just this system to hold up my trash can.

I don't know its off-topic or what but I think technology in computers mainly CPU has slowed down. LSI to VLSI happened in 20 years but since then no new semiconductor technology has launched. Some will say more developments happend in software catagory , clould computing is here. But I fear it will spwan a very big brother:-). Other way is to make a change in cpu matirials; I think that is the way to go.

I agree, I still have an AM2+ Cpu and DDR2 ram. I cant afford to go and get a new computer yet so I put $450 in for a new graphics card, And a 3.0 ghz quad core am2+. I cant spend so much on a new rig yet I have to wait about year I got to much stuff to deal with. But you can see im clearly trying to claw my way back to the Mid to High range rig club Lol.
