Holiday Gift to Myself! *ORDERED->WAITING GAME!*

Well my sig rig is nearing its third year of serving me faithfully (with little to no problems!) and with all the demanding games coming out Im thinking more and more its time to upgrade. Ill probably leave this system intact and give it to my dad to use as a workstation/server, whatever he wants to do with it Ill just set it up.

I havent been very up to date with everything and so like always when I need pc help I come here first! Anyways I kinda got excited on Black Friday and wound up ordering a new case, so I guess my new system is on its way already...

Not too sure of all the components I want/need, but here what I got:

Case - Storm Scout $60 shipped
CPU - i7 970 (from Intel deal) $252 shipped
Motherboard - Rampage III Formula $256 ordered
Memory - Mushkin 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 1600 $135 ordered
GPU - ATI Radeon 5850 (stripping from sig and replacing with old 8800 GTS) free!
HD - want at least 1TB drive, havent bothered looking yetjust found 1TB Hitachi drive laying around! free!
SSD - hoping to grab one off mushkin or intel, for OS primarily
Power - XFX Black Edition XPS-850W $120 shipped
CPU Cooling - dunno. I can get a decent price on an H50 from work...

Total (so far lol): $813

Looking at it theres still a bit of figuring out to do. Main concerns are with the mobo and ram. Hoping I can make this build outlast my current, this one has treated me well thus far

Rig is going to be used mostly for gaming, and perhaps some HD photo editing/photoshop work.

Dissect away gents, and thanks!

For your hard drive, get a spinpoint f3 by samsung or a western digital caviar black.

Case came in today, was a little worried because I didnt realize my garage was open and the UPS guy just left it there without knocking so I had no idea haha!

Also I was helpng a buddy with his new build and I came across a 1TB Hitachi and a 30GB drive, so Ill use the 1TB as main storage drive, I can use the 30gb to boot, or should I hold off for an SSD for that?

Things are coming along nicely!

Memory - again not sure here either, 6gb ripjaws?
GPU - ATI Radeon 5850 (stripping from sig and replacing with old 8800 GTS) free!
HD - want at least 1TB drive, havent bothered looking yetjust found 1TB Hitachi drive laying around! free!

I like the choice of case, and am very jealous of the CPU.

Anyway, yes I wouldn't get that board, it really isn't very good. See below on my opinion on your motherboard choices. Same with memory.

As for the GPU it will definitely suffice, and there is no better value than free. Same thing with your hard drive. I don't personally use an SSD, though they are supposedly the best upgrade you can make(so I should probably consider purchasing one. ). Mushkin and Intel both make good SSDs, you can never go wrong with Mushkin

Your PSU is sufficient, though I've never really used an XFX brand PSU so I hope you researched the model a little bit as it is a HUGE risk buying a sub par power supply. I'm sure you're aware of that though.

For cooling, the H50 is a nice cooler. Though I'd consider it more of a high end air cooler than a real liquid cooling system. It will sufficiently cool your CPU, even if you OC'd it to 4GHz. Its a good choice, especially if you can get a good price on it.

Overall, nice build. I'll be subbed to this thread, so I would love to answer any questions you have along the way.

Rampage III obviously is much better than a Sabertooth. Though you have to consider whether you will really NEED the extras on a Rampage III. I personally would recommend the Rampage III just because I hate to see someone put a CPU like that on a budget motherboard.

And I have always liked Mushkin over G.Skill. They just make higher quality RAM. I have never received a bad stick of RAM from Mushkin. Plus the Ridgebacks tend to have better timings, though they may cost a little more.

OK, I would really like to get the rest of my parts ordered today so that I can get to building this beast!

The XFX PSU is one that was recommended elsewhere in the forum, from what I read it is a Seasonic rebrand and there arnt any issues with it, plus it was on sale for a good price! The only warning I got was to watch out for the intense green color scheme, but I think I can handle that haha!

As of now I am pretty set on picking up the Rampage III Formula. Like you said I dont want to skimp out on the mobo especially with that CPU, its only a matter of ordering new (~$300) or open box (~$225). Thinking of going OB and if it fails just doing a direct RMA thru Asus since they track by serial, correct?

And Im still looking for my RAM. Looking at the Mushkin Blacklines now, hopefully something catches my eye by the end of the day.

Ill get some pics goin once I get more parts, only received the case so far (its sexy though!)

If you don't want to go Mushkins, then I'd recommend the G.Skill PI's for a little bit more.

As far as OB vs New, I have never had a problem with open box products from Newegg. If it comes DOA then I am almost positive that Newegg will still RMA it for you as long as it is within 30 days. They just state they won't replace missing parts not broken ones.

If it is a rebranded Seasonic then I wouldn't worry about it. Good choice then.
