I got it the day it came out and it is a decent game due to new asian based environment, new challenges (quests and missions), new things to work for (new armors, new builds, assasin, rituatlist, etc) titles in paticular, the story line is a lot shorter than in prophies but still fun and chalenging for me; havent bet faction yet but close. It does have some downsides and upsides as descrides but this is from a player with almost 1,100 hrs loged in from guild wars and guild wars factions in 11 months. It is a standalong game (guild wars factions) as is guild wars prophices my preference is that you have the first guild wars before you get faction just so you can get a feel of the game since faction is more fast paced than guild wars prophies since factions world is a lot smaller than prophies world you play on, images of both worlds below. I can probilby talk about this games for a while but i will let this site do all the talking and answering of your questions you may have on both games or one or the other games prophies or factions and i have found this site very usefull in the info it has http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Main_Page

Iv heard guildwars compared to WoW was basicly sesame street on ice vs a slayer concert... In terms of age groups. Also iv heard its much more dissorganized in terms of player helping player. Just what my brother told me when he played it for a week

Well this game is MUCH more fun if you have people to play it with, I had it for about 5 months and I played it like 3 times, then my other 2 friends picked it up and we still have crazy game nights playing GW...

but if your a hardcore gamers you'll beat it quickly, this is a game for people who can't afford a monthly fee, don't have a credit card, or only play for 2-3 hours a week and cant justify a monthly subscribtion

Well, although Factions is quite shorter than Prophecies(13 v 25 missions), it is much more harder. They kinda help by giving much more xp on missions and quests. I got to lvl 20 in about 16hrs with +150K xp atm, but I haven't even been able to finish the second or third main story quests on mainland. In Prophecies I would have done something like 5-8 missions and ~30-40K xp by the same time.
