Best cooler for X850XT? (Silencer died)

Thread Starter
Well I got my ATI Silencer 5 for my Sapphire x850XTPE and it broke... instantly. It started up once at startup and as soon as ATI tool adjusted the fan speed the fan stopped and never worked again. I looked it up, and aparently this is fairly common as voltage spikes can fry a capacitor in the cooler, destroying it. Arctic cooling recommend splicing a molex connector to power the fan... but this seems a little silly. If they recommend that then why not ship it with a molex connector?

Anyways, the point of the post is to ask what should I get then? I have a paypal credit (cost was refunded) and I want to buy a cooler for this card. What is the single best (temperature reduction wise) air cooling solution for my card? I dont really care so much about noise, within reason, but I want something that is going to have a dramatic impact on my load temps. Any suggestions?

Edit: cant spell.

I wouldn't just get rid of it because the fan controller is dead, splice a Molex connector.

if the fan is dead, get a Zalaman VF700CU

It's hard to pinpoint the best across all setups, but in general, I'd have to give the nod to the Zalman VF900.

The VF900 is the best.
Next, the VF700 is not too bad.
If you can find the ThermalRight V1 Ultra, it is better than the VF700, but not the VF900.

I'd like to see someone from here try it out and give us some feedback. I've looked at it before, but couldn't convince myself to pull the trigger.

Personally I would put the stock cooler back on. Those coolers were actually fairly decent. If you won't go for that though... try this thing out http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835119064 It's cheap and got a great review.

I have used both the vf700 and the Silencer and saw a considerable difference between the two. 5*C difference on the core in favor of the Silencer. I hear the vf900 is as good as it will get as far as air coolers go.

Hmm i'm gonna try splicing a molex to see if the fan will live. Not that I have spare molex connectors sitting around but meh. If not I think i want to go for the VF-900. Thanks for that link btw, that store is canadian and takes paypal! Oh yeah and does the VF-900 come with thermal goop like the Silencer? Or do I need to buy some AS5?

I'd use AS5 regardless of whether or not it comes with it
