Looking for a blue-print for my first build.

Thread Starter
I have not yet decided on a CPU, AMD Phenom II 6 core and Intel i5-750 are possibilities on top of my list.

I am looking to build a machine on a budget of +/- $1,000.

I am not building a gaming PC, it will be mostly used for browsing/word processing/streaming video and movies.

Wouldn't mind having a Blu-ray RW drive although I'm assuming they come expensive when integrating with compatible components.

Graphics card needs to be able to handle the 1080p HD without issues but that should be the most strain put on it...

Hopefully you all will be able to help me get an idea of what I am looking at in price and parts!

If you aren't gaming you could build something really cheap.

All of what you listed doesn't require more than a dual core let alone a sexa core cpu.

For the budget you could buy a i5 system, bluray readers i have seen them go for 50 bucks burners for 100.

What is an optimum setup for a "home theater" type machine then? A good Dual Core would make HD video and multitasking a breeze?

The price doesn't seem too bad for a Intel i5 but I believe it does not take DDR2 RAM... Whereas the AMD's do.

youd need to use a am2+/am3 board to use DDR2.... AM3 sockets use DDR3

Do you already have ddr2? If not, there is no reason to buy ddr2 at this time.
If you are using existing parts what existing parts do you have?

If this is a home theater / work pc I'd definitely go for a lower power chip than the two you listed. AMD look at the Athlon IIs X2, X3, X4. They also have the e series, such as the X4 605e which is lower power, though you will pay a slight premium. Intel I'd get a i3, those are perfect for the setup you are describing.

Don't get the X2 555. The L3 cache or overclocking headroom will not benefit you. For the cost go with an Athlon II X3 or X4. Multiple cores will benefit office tasks and multitasking far more.

No existing parts, this build would be from scratch. I don't even have a monitor yet. All I really have is a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. (I can get a new product key for it since my laptop is no longer working, right?)
