Of course there is a change from doing the mod. Most cores won't go much past 580 with-out the mod and as you can see 700+mhz is achievable. I have the 512mb version and the vmod is very different and had my core to 780mhz MAX and is very stable at 718 no artifacts stock cooler which is again different to the 256 version. . Big improvement indeed Although the card I have is dead now but that is a different story.

It's also not that risky. Keep in mind these cores are the same cores put on the 7900GTX and therefore are made to accept 1.4v at stock. Manufacturers just use a cheaper stock fan to save money, thereby passing the savings to the consumer to offer a 'budget' alternative and thus maximizing profits.

Mem clock is a different story. Though, with the right ramsinks, you can push those quite high past the limits as well.

The main physical differences between the GTX and GT are very small:

Different HS.
A couple of different resistors (GTX gets more volts @ stock)
The RAM.

The reason the GTX is expensive is because GDDR3 is expensive. So double the RAM, and you nearly double the price.
