Another Zalman VF900 Thread! (SLI this time)

Thread Starter
Alright.. I know there are like 750 VF900 threads but I haven't seen any pertaining to an SLI build.

I plunged and bought TWO of the bad boys for my SLI'd eVGA 7900GT CO Superclocks. Found a decent deal at eWiz.com for $37 shipped (LINK for those interested).

First, I must say, this cooler is PHENOMINAL! With the eVGA stock coolers, I was running anywhere from 47-54*C idle and under load I clipped my 75*C alarm while playing Oblivion the other day. Running RTHDRIBL was a joke. It steadily rose to 74*C after only a couple minutes before I stomped the program. I just figured these chips were burners. FTR, The second card was always about 3-4*C cooler than the main card. So if I idled 51*C on the main, I was about 49*C on the second card. Pretty similar with load temps as well.

Now that you have my base, know that my testing was all done with about the same ambient temperature.

[gushing begins]

Installed my Zalmans today. Used AS5 and figured it would be a huge upgrade unto itself simply because the stock thermal compound looked like a clump of playdoh. Pretty sure you all know about how fantastic these coolers look and how the lapping is second to none. If you don't, close your eyes and randomly click around and you are sure to land on another VF900 thread. Anywhich, I fired her up and started running tests. Down to it... I havent seen my idle temp reach 40*C yet! Mostly 37-39*C (10+*C improvement). So I figured after a little burn-in, I would give RTHDRIBL a run. Well, it hit the ceiling at 51*C!... then started to come back down! -- After about 15 minutes of RTHDRIBL, It just hovered between 49*C and 51*C. That is around 25*C LOWER than with the stock coolers!!!

OK, now for the weird part. My second card.. remember I said it was always about 3-4*C lower than my main card? Well while my main card was hitting 49-51*C during RTHDRIBL, the second card never cracked 37*C. Now for you SLI vets out there, is that a little weird? Could it be a bad reading or is it in the realm of possibility?

This is all in the first day having these coolers installed so I hope nothing changes during the break-in period (really hope I didn't jinx myself). Also know that I did not use the supplied fan controllers. My Asus has a ton of 3-pin fan headers so I just plugged the coolers direct. They are tons quieter than stock even at full speed.

Any feedback is appreciated but my initial take on these coolers is that they are the best thing since sliced bread. Just.. "Wow!". Now.... off to play some games!

I agree with ya, I like mine. Even with the 1.4v mod on mine, It never goes above 40, I'm debating on doing the 1.5 or 1.55 mod now. As for the SLI temps, My lower card allways ran a little cooler then the top one. Have fun

Dude, you sold me. Just for the sake of science I'm going to go home and replace the stock Thermal Compound with some AS5 to see the difference on my 7900gt CO SC's and if there isn't a big difference I'm going to get me a pair of VF900's! (I'll just have to tell my wife that the computer is going to blow up without them to justify another $74's into my $700 video system.

I gotta get me one of those... gotta get a 7900GT first, though.

Yea, i keep telling my roommate to buy one so he can quiet down his 7600gt, those fans on the stock heatsink spin so fast its just a hi pitched whistle when the card gets hot. The other day when he wasn't here i put his card in my comp to benchmark it. I got annoyed really fast because of the noice, im just soo used to mine being quiet.

I would highly recommend it and thats the exact logic I used....

"I spent $750 on these suckers so whats another $75 to insure they have a nice, long, cool life?"

The stock coolers really are not that great. Plus eVGA's negating heatsinks on the ram only to redesign the cooler for the new KO series just shows you right there that they screwed up. Yeah, please post your findings on the difference between the stock TC and the AS5. I am really curious myself. The stock compound really looks like crap and is just "caked" on there.

BTW, temps are still outstanding! Had some free time yesterday and played Oblivion for about 2-3 hours... bounced off to see my temps at a nice 45*C.

(Did I say I love these coolers?)

Yeah arnt they annoying!? You really can't hear them till you load up a game or when you first boot your system (before the fan controller kicks in). But when they are spinning hard... you know it! Nothing worse than a tiny fan spinning at 100,000 RPM.

Pocketmnky,
Just a little heads up... But if you do decide to get 2 of the Zalmans, you are probably going to have to kick that sound card. They arn't huge by any means but since I have the same board as you do, SLI with those coolers pretty much negates the use of any PCI cards. I went to onboard sound and took out my Audigy because of the lack of room.

WOW

Where did you get such a good deal? Unless I force the fan speed, my X1800XT regularly gets up into the 85-90C range.
