Conroe motherboard prices?

Hey guys, noob here, this is my first time posting here so don't be so harsh . I've read many posts here, however, and have realized that this is a very nice community!

Anyways, my problem is after years of suffering with my puny celeron (a very low celeron mind u) i'm lookin for an upgrade, and hoping for it to last my pretty well for many years. Like everyone else, I am very excited about the Conroe, and if it's pre-test benchmarks are accurate it should be a huge advancement. Anyways, as I am still a student and budget conscious, I am lookin to be realistic here in my purchases.

I have noticed the 9xx drop in prices and I have been intrigued as I am hoping for a dual core, but now I'm leaning towards the conroe. I was wondering if anyone has any idea on how the conroe's motherboard pricing may look like, such as any insider info as I know the cpu is not compatible with mobos out there right now. They way I'm lookin at this is like this:

as of Q3:
Pent d 940- (209) + mobo- (180) = $389
conroe e6600- (316) + mobo- (????)= $316 + ???

that mobo could be a big problem on the price, ya know? I mean are they gonna be like 200 or 300 or maybe more? Because as of now I cant really afford 600 on a cpu and mobo combo, seeing how i'm thinkin of upgrading my whole system including ram, hd, drives, fans, etc. and that alone can be around 2-400.

Also I'm really disinclined to get the lower models of the conroe as they are not dual core and i'm hoping to gettin into basic programming and photoshopping at my school next year. Thanks, I know this is very long, but what can i say, i like talking

Oh also a side note, I currently am using a northwood celeron at 2.8 i mean it has like a 128kb l3 cache or sumthin compared to the conroe's 4mb. That has to be a huge difference. I've never really had a really good processor...startups are slow as hell, cd's take a long time to burn, encoding is torcher, virus scans take hours, what's it like having a fast comp????

Look to spend a good deal of money on a new Conroe setup, you're going to need some decent RAM to let that puppy reach it's potential.

I'd look to spend at least $150-$180 on a decent motherboard, you'll find that you'll want some features that the higher end board give you once you get going in computer building and tweaking

RAM is the other aspect of the Conroe that is still in it's infancy...with everyone switching to DDR2 in the coming months you're going to need at least 2GB of it if you're doing what you say you are doing which could be up in the $250-$300 range for good DDR2.

I'd say spend the money ($600) for all that, also for graphics, I would lean on a 7600GT fto get you through until DX10 comes out because you might have to switch to Vista if your school calls for it, so I would leave that option open

Thanks for the reply guys. That was fast. But yea i'm pretty sure their will be a split in the conroe with dual and single cores, the first two being single and the other two are dual. http://www.channelregister.co.uk/200...oadmap_feb_06/

"The roadmaps come courtesy of Japanese-language site PCWatch, whose prognostications usually prove highly accurate. According to a report today, Q3 will see the debut of Conroe as the E6700, E6600, E6400 and E6300, clocked at 2.66GHz, 2.40GHz, 2.13GHz and 1.86GHz, respectively. The first two parts are dual-core, with a total of 4MB of L2 cache; the second pair are single-core, 2MB L2 chips. All four will support a 1066MHz frontside bus speed."

I think 180 is fairly reasonable for the motherboard. Although I don't think i can afford the combo, 180 is much less than i thought it would be, as i'd imagine a new mobo with conroe compatibility would be a lot more. And as for ram, I think 1 gig would do for my situation as wen i looked here http://www.tomshardware.com/2005/12/...ed/page12.html I think i'm more suitable with only 1 or 1.5 and maybe will upgrade in the future. hopefully conroe would be wat it is hyped up to be, but i guess we shall see when it's released in 2 more months. till then...

Single-core Conroe doesn't exist. It's not like the result would be significantly greater than Cedarmill, probably only about ~10% so one wishing single core can stay with Cedarmill. The site you state has a date of Feb. for release and at that time speculation regarding single core Conroe was ripe. It is not anymore and it is now May.

Really? That would be great then, my budget would be less strained if the e6300 was dual core. I hope it is a good overclocker. Oh and btw i hav another tad question...why do people buy a higher model, say the d 950, if they can get the d 920 and overclock it to the same or higher clock speeds? Theoretically it should be at the same strength in terms of cpu power right? or is that the d 950 would be able to oc' much higher, say 4.7 as opposed to the 920 only going to 4.4 with the same cooling, because it was set higher so it is easier to go higher? Thanks. As you can tell, im a major novice. (lol. your children computer wizes can probably overclock circles around me)

The multiplier is the reason. Since Intel locks the multiplier in all production (excluding EE and of course non-production Engineering Samples (ES) ) CPU's there is no ability to play with multipliers. The 950 might well overclock higher than the 920 (greater possibility) though but with the multiplier of 14X one needs a far higher fsb to make the grade compared to the 17X of the 950.

You are far more likely to make a higher overclock (with a lower fsb) easier on a 950 than a 920. Most overclockers would buy the 920 and clock it up though. That is what I would do, however at this time, the 950's are so cheap it is probably where I would go if I was going to move to that series.

"The four dual-core Conroes are clocked at 1.86, 2.13, 2.40 and 2.67GHz, respectively, run on a 1066MHz frontside bus and contain 4MB of cache shared between the two cores"

This is an updated one, i guess they made a mistake or it was changed. This is very good news. If it clocks well, then i'm sure to get it over the pentium d.

Do you guys think 3ghz + is possible? I've read sources that say it's a good overclocker.
