I'm failing

Thread Starter
I just tryed my first attempt at an overclock. It just won't be stable at any speed but stock. I put memory timings at 3-3-3, lowered memory to ddr166, dropped cpu multi to 8x, and found the highest fsb speed I could. Well actually not the highest. I went to 240mhz. So after that I take the fsb down to 205 and make the cpu multi at 11x. Everthing runs fine. So I increase the fsb by 5mhz increments. Everything was good until I hit 220mhz fsb and it became extremely unstable. I increased the voltage and that made 220 stable. I tried 225 after that and that was extremely unstable also. So I went to increase the voltage again and that didn't do any justice for it. I know this is my first time and I'm doing something wrong. Please help.

make sure u take down your htt multi to 4x. anything over 250 fsb u have to use 3x.

fsb x htt mutiplier < 1000

Oh thanks. I didn't know that.

Agreed, if you haven't changed your HTT to x3 then you will always fail as your stock clock is 200MHz and having a stock HTT of x5 = 1000 and you shouldn't go above that mark, maybe a little but not too much and it wont matter how low you clock everything else, if the FSB is over 1000 you'll be unstable

Awesome. I'm so happy now. I just thought my hardware was holding me back.

Well I'm back again. I had the HTT set to 4x, my fsb set to 220, memory set at ddr166, vcore set at 1.5v, and ran the prime 95 torture test last night. Any other tips for getting a stable overclock? I'm starting to think my processor just sucks for overclocking.
maybe your motherboard chipset needs more voltage? 1.5v is rather high for such a low overclock on that cpu (mine is at 1.5v at 2.4ghz).

you could also try flashing your motherboard's bios. i remember when i first got my motherboard, it refused to post above a 229mhz fsb, but then after a flash, it could post higher. just a thought- sometimes flashes can help... look up your motherboard on google to see if any newer ones help this issue (if this IS the problem).

Try a 166 divider, htt 3x, memory timmings 3 4 4 8, vcore can go as high as 1.60vcore, only when you need it to make it stable. keep your temps below 55c under load with a good cooler.try a 10x multi. I don't know about that motherboard it might be holding you back, I just recently had a 3500 venice @ 2.86ghz stable so you should get a decent overclock with it.

It's probably my board. It crashes within an hour after starting prime95.
keep in mind that you might be right-- your cpu might be what's holding you back. mine only goes to 2.45ghz with good stability (8+ hours in Prime95), and i've read of people pushing these things to 2.8-2.9ghz!

however, i'd think you'd be able to get better than a 20mhz increase on your bus....
