I was into the hype at first, 10 min.

This has been posted before but I tried not to reply because strong emotions stirred about this topic, and before I do that I would like to elaborate:

How can you successfully play multiplayer games with the PPU?

Right now you can play only GRAW(Ghost Recon:AW) online with PPU, and even though it doesn't actually add any true physics (interaction), it does add more 2d cutouts flying at your face. But if I am playing against someone with PPU, isn't he handicapped to me? He's game play is affected by the added debris (although it will not interact with anything) blocking his view, distracting even. What about when they are going to use some actual physics and not waste resources on completely MEANINGLESS things that can be more effectively implemented with the use of shaders and more in-game options, how can one successfully have interaction with objects and one cant, are they client side hardware or server side?
-Yes they can put the physics engine in the game without the hardware as a requirement, but will anyone be able to run it well, without a bottleneck?

Every single piece of hardware in the PC is engineered for more than just 1 specific purpose, unlike the PPU is designed. Yes the sound card will be the only one that isn't truly necessary, but sound card serves for games/music and multimedia/recording/communication/and even device support (gamepads and such). Without a sound card you will not be severely hindered, but there will be a lot of things that change when you invest 60$ in a very decent one. The rest you really could not have a functioning PC without.
On the other hand, for $200+ you will be able to see more things fly from 1 bullet hole [period]. I haven't really researched applications using the hardware, but I am led to believe there aren't any. So for the good majority one will find a great use for the PPU, an awesome paperweight, and when you need to see those butterflies after you blow up a car, just toss-it in, for that 5% of the time.

How is the PPU rational at all, for games at least?
I didn't think it would make that big of an impact, but I was very wrong.
I rationalized that from the GRAW video I saw on their site, the frame rate should be lower, since there is more for the graphic card to render, but here is the proof:
http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/sho...php?t=17568825
I believe that seals the the deal: you have to cross your toes that after spending that much $ on the awesome paperweight, you will only get decreased performance and more than it actually shows. Those little effects cost BIG frame rates, more than 27% decrease.

I do give some props to AGEIA for trying this, but you can’t rationally compare this to the first voodoo cards or any other next-gen technology that was scrutinized when it first came out, because there was more thought and planning done than 1 year of playing around. In the end though, I do believe that Red and Green, the owners of HAVOC and HAVOC FX will still dominate as king since, as others have mentioned, the market is going for more all in one type of hardware, possibly leading us to when not only the PPU will be combined into the core of the GHX card but other peripherals also.

Just my 2 cents

Maybe people like it because of the added realism when playing single player. Also obviously not everyone that does online gaming is super competitive. Some just want the game to look good and to have fun. I mean I could play CS:S just fine on my old 9550 but I bought a x850xt because I wanted the game to look nice and that adds more fun for me it but doesn't make me play any better. I think that the advancement in tech is cool. Almost all new hardware that comes out has tons of bugs and glitches at first. Once they get them all fixed though fully integrated real time physics into completely destructable environments sounds pretty freaking sweet to me.

Well, to me there has to be drawn an individual line for performance vs playability:

Yes i can run oblivion with crazy settings and 2048 textures, but I will not want to watch a slideshow every time there is more than 1 npc on the screen. Same goes for the ppu, yes i could add more shrapnel to the screen (not actually realistic, it does not interact with ANYTHING, empathize this) and have to pay over 300$ so that i can get %20 decrease in performance, its all about the individual, and if you have the resources and the drive for this, than by all means I urge people to buy it and support it, because the only drive in technology IS competition, and I don't want Red and Green to buy them out before ageia has more time. Also in the world of technology there is always the performance/dollar comparison. If the price was at least under $75 that I might consider it (not plausible, it probably takes that much to manufacture it), but with how it is implemented right now and from the looks of future games, I do not believe that ageia will have what it takes to survive with the big boys, even though they are the only ones with the PPU.

A little addon:

Quote:
What exactly is the AGEIA PhysX Processor?

The AGEIA PhysX processor is the first dedicated hardware accelerator for PC games that enables dynamic motion and interaction for a totally new gaming experience.

Exciting immersive physical gaming feature that you can expect to see in next generation cutting edge titles will include groundbreaking physics features such as:

* Explosions that cause dust and collateral debris
* Characters with complex, jointed geometries for more life-like motion and interaction
* Spectacular new weapons with unpredictable effects
* Cloth that drapes and tears the way you expect it to
* Lush foliage that sways naturally when brushed against
* Dense smoke & fog that billow around objects in motion
Just with the current shaders and such, those effects might really be more efficient but now i'm just speculating, and we haven't even seen DX10 cards
yet.

And they talk about serious power required to deliver realistic physics, but I am still amazed at what HL2 can do, that GRAW wont ever be able to touch. And the oblivion ragdols are spot-on.
