Why is my computer so slow?

Thread Starter
Alright, here's the problem. My computer was acting fine until about a week ago. Now, all of a sudden, it will start locking up. Normally, I'm at 100% CPU utilization because of folding, but now I'll be at 100% because of random processes. msmsgs.exe is the worst offender, but even explorer.exe (windows itself) will take up 100% on occasion. I've stopped folding for now to see if that solves the problem, but still, this is so annoying. I've done a defrag, removed old files and temp files, even disabled hibernate, but nothing seems to stop this from happening.

Run Spybot & other anti spyware programs, run an anti virus, like AVG free to check for those nastys in your system.

When was the last time you formatted your drive?

Try an anti-virus and spyware scan. They can cause a computer to become slow

I run Norton and Microsoft AntiSpyware very often. They both run at night if my computer's on. I formatted about three or four months ago when I had a corrupted system file.

Try AVG or nod32 and another anti-spyware. I dont completely trust those.

How many background processes do you have running in the background

It sounds like you may need another windows install. There may be something your installing thats causing this. What programs have you installed recently?

norton is about the worst anti virus you can run, most coders who write virri write them so they disable or make themselves look and act like other forms of files to the most popular anti virus programs like. norton , mcafee ect . avg is free and pretty good .. you might wana get a program called hijack this and run it , if you want to pm me the results of the hijack this log i can tell you what to delete and what to keep.

use firefox to instead of IE .. that alone helps alot
adaware
spybot
spysweeper
are all good programs to get rid of maleware and spyware.

you also might wana disable the messenger service also

As others have said I also think you have a malware on your rig, so this what I advice you to do, this is exactly what I did when I had the chance to meet MSBlaster 2 years ago :
- Run a good antivirus (not Norton), I'd go for AVG since RAV antivirus was discontinued
- Run a antispyware such as ad-aware and spyboot
- Format the system partition and reinstall the OS. Any malware that causes that much damage leaves traces even thow the AS/AV softs clean all out. They tend to affect various system files that after even cleaning don't behave as supposed to, so a OS reinstall helps
- Another round of antivirus/antispyware scan right after the install.

msmsgs.exe is an annoying little **** of a program. It is Windows Messenger.

I got rid of it just by uninstalling windows messenger through the control panel.

Wth is wrong with Norton? works great for me... just because some people dont know how to use things they say they suck..
