Help! Need 2 More CD ROMs no more PATA slots.

Thread Starter
Ok I'm using an Abit KN8 SLI motherboard; My problem is that I've used my two PATA slots, one using an IDE hard drive, the other using a CD Rom/Burner and a DVD Rom, and I still need to install 2 more PATA CD ROMs from an old computer but I have no more PATA slots. Any solutions? Splitters? Mods?

You can never run more than 4 ide devices off a x86 computer . you may need to get external boxes for them.

That's not entirely true... my mobo as not only 4 SATA channels, but also 3 (count 'em... 3) IDE channels. Now granted, two of them are basically for RAID configs, but you can (or at least I am) using them as standard IDE drives.

Right now I'm using
  1. SATA channel 1: 160Gb SATA drive
  2. Primary IDE channel: DVD-RW + DVD-ROM
  3. Primary EIDE channel: 80Gb + 40Gb PATA drives
  4. Secondary EIDE channel: 40Gb PATA drive

Like DanNEBTD said, you'd need to get a PCI IDE controller card.

OR

You could get a SATA converter board http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applicatio...8690&CatId=468

This might be a dumb question, but why do you need 3-4 CD Roms? I only have a DVD/CD Burner and nothing else for optical....extra opticals just adds unwanted heat yes?

Not true at all. I just sold a motherboard with four IDE ports capable of running 8 IDE drives and even RAID'ing them. Not only that but I could have also bought a few IDE PCI cards and had even more.

Just as a thought i came across this: http://www2.abit.com.tw/page/uk/mult...+to+Serial+ATA
A little while ago.

If you have spare SATA ports on your board this might help.

Why? Because I hate cd cases, and as a gamer, you're constantly switching out CD's. Therefore, I will no longer switch out CD's because I only use 4. NFS:MW / Oblivion (DVD) / WC:III FT / BF2:SF. And so I can get rid of the old computer sitting next to me when I spraypaint and use all the parts it has, not limited to floppy drive and 2 CD Roms, needing black spraypaint on the front (to match the new computer). And because it just looks cooler
