High Definition Content Protection

Its a stupid technology, really. Unfortunately, youll probably need it to play back most HD content, depending on what is decided.

It's some High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection, it's basically the new technology you'll find in the new windows Vista.

wow and its good to have this?

does it block a signal? i mean how does the monitor KNOW what your doing is in HD? I mean HD playback on a media player on your PC, how is going to know?

It's good if you have an HDCP compliant monitor. It's not about being good or not, it's just a way that MS puts out to prevent piracy or disencourage 'em. Not just your monitor but your video card have to supports it as well if you want to play HD movies. I think it's just stupid, because those who use pirates movies obviously doesn't care of the quality that much. And MS didn't even think about that. I think I'm going to buy the Dell 30" 3007WFP just in case I buys HD content in the near future so save me time and some hassles.

You've heard of the new HD-DVD and Blu-Ray formats? Thats all HDCP stuff. Its the battle between sony's Blu-Ray and ???? HD-DVD formats for the next generation of discs.

Windows Vista will support HDCP. If you have a dvd in one of the afore mentioned formats and want to run it from your computer, you will need Vista, and HDCP compatible DVD drive, Vid Card, and monitor. IF you do not have all those things, then it will not play the movie at this new full HD resolution.

This is my understanding of it. Anyone who knows more can correct me.

HDCP just makes sure that the video stream is encrypted all the way from the disc to the output on the monitor (what you see). When an HD-DVD is played, it looks for an HDCP code in the HD-DVD drive. The drive, in turn, checks to see if there's a valid HDCP code on the graphics card. Finally, the graphics card checks for a valid HDCP code on the monitor. Not uncrackable, but AACS will be cracked before HDCP will.
