Crunch Build Log Bandwidth-Killer edition - Page 10

Thought this was kinda absurd--don't usually see a CD tray jutting from a piece of furniture...it just clears the top after a few adjustments.

This shot shows the CDROM hidden up in the slot. As the drive will only be used to load up the rigs and get them configured it will eventually

disappear--since they are all on the net it is really not required and will be eliminated once Crunch is up and running

I was messing about with the Nidecs and they are way loud--I could only get them to run one speed--full blast--pretty much overkill at this point

without a stout rheobus. So I dug through the modding bin again and mounted up some quiet fans. You can see the Fan Mate controller beside the

PSU--the clear 80mm is thermally controlled and keeps the HDD a whole lot cooler--changed from 26C to 15 C. The 2 120mm fans have dropped the

CPU temp from 50C to 44 C while overclocked and overvolted (230 FSB and 1.56 Vcore) and Folding. A good improvement--time for more hertz and

volts? Not sure about pushing yet. Still amazed that a socket 478 cooler is working on a socket 754 (the 754 AMD IHS is huge compared to the 478

Intel)

Here is a shot of the installed fans--they are running--the flash stopped the motion. The overall increase in Dba is negligible--Crunch is still quieter than

the 820 or WaterClocker--gonna have to put the dust filter in now...oh well.

Yes Crunch looks full--but looks are deceiving--the HDD cage will soon disappear as will the 80mm fan--a fan will stay beside the PSU--another PSU

identically mounted will sport another 120mm fan--that will cap off the top--I plan to use the Nidec fans seriously undervolted on a rheobus--the HDDs

will end up being mounted from aluminum channel in the central space of the case when all 4 microATX boards are in place--I do not think there will

be eough room to space each mobo 1.5" from the case side and still clear each other--1" would work for thin form factor drives to fit behind the

boards--but just barely. As the case gets more and more hardware location will become critical. Aircooling may not work--especially for supercharged

805s...so once again everything will change--that is part of what I like about this particular project--it grows.

Loving that quiet CPU cooler--the Clawhammer and Gigabyte board are winning me over--even on 98 the machine is very reponsive. Now for some

benchies....

Once again thanks for all the interest, support, hardware, software and advice! This build is almost addictive as this forum...lol

Thanks for the advice 'Dude. The Clawhammer (Crunch1) is running at 44C now with the added case fans. The OC appears stable enough for Folding 24/7. I think part of the instability issues with 98 have to do with peripherals and their drivers--since Crunch1 has none of those nasty things I have a feeling it will do for the moment.

Still need to get Crunch1 into the FAHmon clients--the XP machines do not see the 98 machine. I have received good advice about this and think I have taken the needed steps to properly network everything--but it just does not appear in the network for the 3 XP machines. As stated VNC would be the ticket...I'm getting there little by little.

More stuff for Crunch has arrived--just received 98SE courtesy of Chozart. A front panel and some mobo mounting stuff is on the way as well. I now have enough HDDs to put 3 more mobos on line and still run RAID on Crunch1. The next rig will most definitely be microATX--may take a week or so to get that rolling.

As i have said b4 great build.....i was planing on getting a few of theses>>>http://www.partspc.com/ProductDetail...85&ProdID=7763 and building a dresser style slide out tower to hold them. i figured that with the 2.66Ghz dual core CPU and the ASUS P5V800 i should be able to have quite alot of folding power. I want to take the CPUs to 3.5Ghz and fold 2 instances on each pc. i can wait to build this thing this summer....maybe the combos might help you out as well as the mobo is micro-ATX with onboard video and dual core. an u use one psu to power more than 1 mobo??? i think ive seen sum1 doing this b4 but not sure who.

Geez Cyber, you are MONSTER! think when you get 4 Motherboard all going!

few questions, How many PC's do you have?

Is the crunch the only dedicated folder?

EDIT: I think everyone here at OC.net thanks you for your time and money, especially since it is going to a great cause!

I have 6 cores folding right now...4 PCs counting the Wife's (I slipped FAH in w/o telling lol)--what got me off on this was discovering FAHconsole and how to get 2 instances running on HT or Dulacore CPUs. Such a n00b lol.

Yeah I will prolly put the Clawhammer in a different case and use 4 microATX mobos. In a month or so I should have it completely together--although there are those that doubt 4 mobos will fit (or run on 2 PSUs) I will do what it takes to pull it off. I do enjoy a challenging build....

No updates--I am broke, exhausted and recharging for the next go around. Stay tuned...I just recieved something in the mail I need to get from the post office--might be an up to date OS that will allow me to run RAID--just do not have the time right now to get it...

Thank you for your continued interest in this project Nox!

Not really a huge update here--just thought I'd let you know that by placing Crunch directly over the AC vent on the floor insidde the house I dropped the CPU temps 10C--from 46C to 36C--the HDD is at 48F! All the metal parts in Crunch are cold--like a cold beer can cold. I had thought it might make a difference--but with the lowered temps I was able to unplug all the fans except the Zalman. Very cool and quiet indeed.

I am able to monitor all the Folding through FAHmon on Crunch--for some reason he 98 machine can see all the XP machines...wierd.

Been too busy to get down to the post office and see what all has arrived. Maybe in the next week I can make some more progress--looking forward to setting up RAID on a more up to date OS.
