Microsoft piracy pop-up is persistent - Page 3

It is my understanding that if your system fails a Genuine Advantage check, you will not be able to download any updates that are for better performance. Like a WMP v10 update, or updates to fix a minor bug. However, they can not block critical security updates because they can not verify that their validation is 100% correct.

Piracy is wrong, but I know a couple people who just got sick of calling Microsoft everytime they changed a hard drive and try to get themt o revalidate. I had a friend who upgraded his RAM and his copy of windows said he had changed to much hardware and had to revalidate. After 3 hours on HOLD, he said screw it and used a keygen program to get a new key and get his computer back. Is he a pirate? No, he paid $150 for his copy of XP Home, all he asked what that he was allowed to USE it. I got my copy of Pro off eBay for $100 about a year or so ago (fully validated copy) and have had my fair share of problems with M$ and their validation. I will be thinking long and hard before spending any money on Windows newest release. Xp Pro does everything I need it to, and I plan to start learning Linux this weekend, loading it on an old system to play with it. It seems M$ only wants to sell to the low end user who just buys a pre-built system every 2-3 years, not to those of us who actually know our way around a computer and just upgrade componants.

Talk about MS code? Pirates discovered that you could simply go into your IE Advanced Tools and simply turn off the Genuine Advantage tool since it was a plug-in to IE. Just turn it off. LOL. I hear they finally fixed that, but it's just so funny.

And in the end, this can all be avoided by getting a Corp Edition of their software. I have had XP Pro Corp for years and haven't had any of the problems that the lower versions have. It seems like MS is saying "If you're willing to pay us a lot more money, you won't have any hassle." Not really fair if you ask me.

It seems crazy how MS can really be failing to stop piracy... They have so much money it seems hardly conceivable that they could fail... Having said that though, I guess they are so used to bringing out new versions of Windows that are simply the old version with a few tweaks and a paint job that they have totally forgotten how to truly innovate...

Perhaps being a monopoly will kill MS in the end - damn it I hope so... Wouldn't it be great if there were loads of OS companies, all competing. They would be forced to innovate to bring faster, more stable, more compatible and cheaper OS's to the market, in order to vie for market share. They would have to innovate to give the consumer what the consumer wants, not what the developers think the consumer should have... Just imagine having real choice between many operating systems, all of which are compatible across LAN and WAN and compatible with all games and other software... It would be great!

Just look how the competition between Intel and AMD and ATi and Nvidia has sparked innovation and product development! Just one major competitor to MS would be enough to really see some rapid improvement in the way MS does things, let alone if MS had two, or three major competitors.

Innovation has been stifled, prices have been inflated, consumer choice has been diminished to virtually nothing and the thing that you should be in control of (your OS) is now, though MS, trying to control you and spy on you as well!

I hate big brother... It's bad enough that the governments, under the guise of "protecting us" are spying on us, now MS is spying on us too! My life is no longer private! Thank goodness I'm such a boring individual!

Try before you buy is one thing. Theft is another. There is a 30 day grace period to try the OS out and if you like it then you buy it.

My time is worth money and so is Microsofts. Just because they are a large Monopoly does not take away from the fact I would be a "Thief" if I did not pay for it. It is patently unfair to "steal" the software and whatever excuses one wishes to use it is still theft.

If you don't want to pay for it, then move to a platform that is either free or that you want to pay for and personally I think that this thread has members speaking of software being hacked and links to show such is not what this forum is about either.

I would be on a Pirate Forum if that was what I wanted.

"My friend" bought XP after years of using it. He got it for $85. To him that is fair. He wasn't going to pay $200 for it. He knows there is a new version of windows is coming out, but he doesn't feel like spending $300 on it so he will suffer with his $85 copy of windows XP.

It's like music CDs. He'll buy a CD that is decent and fairly priced like the new Tool album for $10. He won't buy a CD that has two good songs for $20.

I also hear google is making their own OS. If it's anything like gmail I'm in.

Dame right, piracy does equate to stealing and it is unfair to the developers and a crime. Equally, charging a highly-inflated price for a product because there is no real choice for consumers but to buy your product is also unfair, although not criminal it would seem...

In healthy capitalist markets, monopolies should not exist and in many counties (like the UK) there are laws to prevent monopolies from coming into existence, simply because they are damaging to markets and potentially to the economy as a whole.

Sadly, what is unfair and what is illegal, are not always the same thing. Really, law should be based upon what is fair and ethical, but all too often what is truly fair does not get championed. When vast amounts of money are involved, little concepts like "fairness" don't seem to matter too much anymore...
