Opterons require ECC/Registered RAM?

Thread Starter
Ok I just bought a server mobo and Opteron 246 off of ebay because im building a game server and I dont think I research this very well because here
http://www.gamepc.com/labs/view_cont...eron246&page=2
they say the Opterons only work with ECC and Registered RAM. Or is it ECC or Registered RAM. I dont know. Can anyone confirm this? BTW this is a brand new Opteron 246 so I dont know if that makes a difference. (This article was published in 2003)

I am assuming that the opteron is skt 940 correct? if so then yes you do need the expensive ECC registered ram. If you go with a skt 939 opteron you would not need the ECC registered ram.

First off... welcome to the forum

Opterons come in two pin versions: a 939 pin version, which works in any 939 MoBo with "normal" RAM and a 940 pin version, developed for Servers (the original Opteron; the 939 came later). As far I know, the 940 pin version does indeed require ECC/Registered RAM, so you might have an issue, since the Opteron 246 is a 940 pin version. Also, you mentioned 'Server Motherboard', which also is likely to require ECC/Registered RAM.

I hope this helps

Yeah mostly likely you need ECC/ resigtered ram
