What judges how well fans cool?

OK everyone, I was just wanting to know if someone can tell me what I should look for whenever I'm looking for fans. Lie, what I mean, is what specs I should go for. I know the Big Typhoon is a favorite to MANY, and everyone praises how well it works, but to my understanding, isn't "cfm" what is used to judge how well the part cools? If that's the case, then why would a Big Typhoon with a cfm of 54.5 be more efficient to have than a fan that has roughly 90-95 cfm, and roughly 4 times the price as well? I'm not saying one is the better one, cuz everyone else knows MUCH more about this stuff than I do, but one more question. What is a good dBA to go for as well, or wat other specs should I look out for?

more cfm =s better temps...

haha, wow, thanks for the chart! That's a really nice catch. Haha, I guess I'll find most of my answers there. Ok, so w/b coolant paste, should I really apply that stuff on? Is the difference realy that significant?

The Big Typhoon or any CPU cooler for that matter is more than just a fan. The design of the heatsink and the use of metal is also important. All copper is better than aluminum, since copper is a better heat conductor. The shape of the heatsink and the thickness (or thin-ness) of the blades also play an important role in the manner heat is removed from the CPU.

Having that said, higher CFM normally results in better cooling: that's why many people here replace the stock fan from the BT iwth a more powerful fan. The offset is more noise: 45dB is getting pretty loud already, and there often is a pretty linear relationship between CFM and noise.
