Nice job What I'm really wanting to know though is if anyone knows if the X1800XT specifically benefits from AS5. I heard that the stock paste on the 7900GT is like playdough and people are getting massive temp drops by changing it, so I was wondering if I should too. Or does it already have decent paste on there?

If it will drop it a couple c's then yes anything to bring temps down is always worth it, just takes some time and effort is all.

I want to know if it will drop a couple of c's. Does anyone know?

Also jrabb, do you know anything about the thermal pads on the memory being ruined? If they were do you know where I could get new ones of the right thickness? These ones look to be about 1/4 inch or 1/8 inch. It's hard to tell looking at it from the side.

I will be getting my X1800XT to replace my RMA'd X1900XT (had to save some cash) tomorrow, and will be replacing the thermal compound with AS5 and putting on a Zalman AM cooler. I will let you know if it helps.

I took mine off and the memory pads are about 1/8" thick. They shouldnt come apart as long as you take the HS off carefully. After I replaced the core pad with AS5 my temps went down about 5C. But make sure it touches the core. I was kinda worried about that.
Very nice!

Great! Thanks a bunch. That's exactly what I wanted to know

EDIT: Core pad!?!? You cannot mean to tell me they use a thermal pad on these things? Geez... before installing a hairdrier fan on the card they might want to check into some decent thermal paste.

Yep. Thats how they do it on pretty much all stock coolers I think. When I first got my Prescott the stock cooler had a thermal pad on it and it ran around 55C load. I replaced it with AS5 and it dropped to about 45C load.

u got to check this out .its hard having to spend money sometimes but if you do . this thing rocks. its cooling my vid card. i have performed a volt mod and i have the clocks set @ gpu 570 mem 570 from 500 /500 under load only pegs 47 C. comes with cpu and gpu water blocks. not good to try and cool cpu and gpu unless @ stock speeds but for gpu........its way more then enough. u can also mount internally or externally. this unit has my recommendation.http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...&Sku=K450-1058

like i said this unit can be mounted internally without disconnecting. i go to lans also and i also take my external cooler with me. quick disconnect without leaking is awsome.
