External Sata Case Problem

Thread Starter
Hello,

I've just bought this :

1. CHIEFTEC USB 2.0 EXTERNAL ENCLOSURE FOR 3.5'' SATA HDD
(so this is the external case)

2. MAXTOR DIAMONDMAX 10 MODEL 6V300F0 SATA II 16 MB BUFFER

First when I plugged it in, it said that it found a new hardware but an ERROR OCCURED or whatever and it said that I'll have problems with running it... The second time when I put the drive in the case and plugged it into my laptop, it doesn't recognize it... i just makes the sound that it's plugged and then a second later that it's unplugged, and like this to eternity...

The manual said that you don't have to install any additional drivers....

Is it maybe because it's not formatted yet?

Help me out guys, i'm going beserk...

thanks

Hi and welcome, if you could go into your "User CP" and fill out your system specs it will help us help you

As for the HDD, do you have SATA ports on your motherboard to test the HDD?

Thank you,
Sorry didn't see them, I filled them out now... I'm not sure about my motherboard though.

it says in DEVICE MANAGER under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers :
Intel ultra ATA storage controller
primary IDE channel
secondary IDE channel

No problem.

The best way to find the make/model of your motherboard is to pull off the case panel and take a look at the motherboard (around the PCI slots or RAM slots).

As you said it was a SATA HDD you may need drivers, im not really sure.

EDIT:- If your computer is a laptop ignore the case part.

Is it recogniced in bios?

If it is, you just plop inn your XP cd, and use that for partitioning.

Yes you can. No problem!!

But remember, you have to make a partition first.

From how you describe the problem, I can't help but think about a broken cable, or a bad connection. Try checking that too.
