i7 950 - first try at a build

Thread Starter
I've been looking around sites trying to put together a build. I don't really have a budget (within reason) but I'm not looking to create a monster. I'm hoping to be able to play a game and watch a movie at the same time (if I wanted) without a major hit to performance. I may want to do some game dev as well. I'll also be OC'ing it but I'm new to that too.

This is what I've come up with. Please be critical, if you want. I'm not really sure about the GPU. I am hoping to get a build that won't be too difficult together, but I'm not too concerned. Is there anything I've missed?

CPU - Intel Core i7-950 Bloomfield 3.06GHz
MB - ASUS Rampage III Extreme LGA 1366 Intel X58
RAM - G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 12GB (3 x 4GB) SDRAM DDR3 1600
GPU - MSI R5870 Lightning II Radeon HD
SDD - OCZ Vertex 2 120GB
HD - WD Caviar Green WD20EARS 2TB 64MB
CASE - Antec Twelve Hundred
BD - LG WH10LS30K 10X Blu-ray Burner
DVD - ASUS Black (cheap)
PSU - CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W
COOLER- CORSAIR Hydro H70
OS - WIN 7 pro

RAM overkill, otherwise, great build

oh, and personally I'd pickup another video card, something really low cowered and Cheap to run an additional monitor. You could have the largest-screen in the world, but I'd simpler to have multiple screens.

I thought it might be overkill but I figured I'd just spring for the 12 now. I guess it would make more sense to get 2 4gbs and upgrade later.

I would go with 6gb ram, Formula board and get the GTX 580 instead.

RIIIF is actually newer, and 12gb will hurt your OC. Also I would get some mushkin blacklines, 180 for better timings.

The GTX 580 must be good since the good manufactures are out of stock at newegg, I was going to wait till the new year anyways. I didn't think that more ram would hurt oc'ing, would 1333 or 1600 be better? Would I need to get a higher psu if I went for 2 580s?

RAM -> 6GB (Personally 1333 is fine, timings are a waste of cash)
Case -> HAF932, NZXT Phantom, HAF-X (1200 is old and lame)
Cooler -> Thermalright Silver Arrow (performs better for cheaper)
CPU -> i7 930 is just as good, don't buy into this binning crap.

I'd also say no to the blu-ray. Put whatever savings you get into graphics and a beefier PSU.

To be completely honest I plan on going for three monitors which is why I am going SLI 580s. If you are just going 1 monitor or even 2 there really is no reason.

Give me your budget and I will put together a build for you to give you more options.

That ammout of ram will kill the board. The extreme is overkill if you just watch a movie and game at the same time. Possibly wait for sandy bridge or get on the p55 platform.

My budget is 2,000 to 3,000. More options would be very helpful.
