Cautions to take when switching to new case? - Page 2

post #11 of 19
I usually slip a rubber band on each wrist before I dive in, and am always careful to ground myself, don't work on carpet if I can avoid it, and if I do, never in sock feet, rubber soles usually.

My first piece of advice is to make sure you know what all your wires go to. If you have to, make a diagram, take a picture, whatever you need to do, just to be safe.

My opinion is to go in the following order;

  1. Unplug PSU, and turn of PSU switch.
  2. Unplug all power leads inside the case. Expansion cards, drives, then motherboard.
  3. Remove PSU
  4. Unplug all drive cables
  5. Remove drives
  6. Remove expansion cards (place in anti-staic bag)
  7. Remove heatsink/fan
  8. Remove RAM modules (place in anti-static bag)
  9. Unplug the case wires (HD LED, PWR switch, RESET, ect..) from Motherboard, and remove motherboard (place in or on anti-static bag)

Then, simply re-install in reverse order. The reason I say this is because I find it easier to install and position the motherboard in a bare case. My current case, the top of the motherboard is only about 3mm away from the bottom of the PSU. Also, with my DVD drives, and HDs installed, I have to angle the motherboard out. Without them, it just lifts right out.

By going in a logical order, removing one part to gain access to the next part, and then following the same steps in reverse to re-install, you minimize any confusion about what you need to do next, and what you already did. The human mind is a creature of memory, if you do something the same way, over and over, eventually, it becomes instinct.

Depends on your motherboard I think. Check the manual, it should tell you what the beeps (or in this case "beep") means.

For my P5WD2-Premium, One Beep means;

Keyboard Error
Refresh Time Error
No Master Drive Detected

BTW, nice case, I was looking at that one for my custom build, but didn't like the 140mm fan in the front.....my theme is going to be silver with red main lights, couldn't find a 140mm red LED fan. Also, I decided I needed about 7 free 5.25 bays.

but I still want to do something with that case in the future.

Hey, just remember to install the rubber washers. Case > Brass bolt things > rubber washer > mobo > rubber washer > screws. That's how I like to do it. I'm sure it's completely uneccessary but it's just a little extra security.

if everything is loading properly, it might be the beep that some motherboards use to indicate a successful POST.
